Forums - Gaming - SSB: DS?

No, I don't have any information regarding a DS iteration of SSB being announced.

Rather, I'm attempting to spark discussion and thoughts about the concept of SSB on DS.

So, let's have it. What would you think of the concept? How could it be done? What are some ideas that you think would be good to integrate into a possible SSB:DS?

Believe me...I've wanted a SSB on handheld since the first game came out.

I understand why it wouldn't work on a GBA, but now that we've reached N64-quality graphics on a handheld, if not better...I don't see why a SSB isn't possible.

The only problem I can see with having a Super Smash Bros game on the DS is...how do you Smash? I suppose the stylus could be used for some sort of smash attack...swipe right for smashing right, swipe left for smashing left...stuff like that.

Anyway...if they could get that control scheme to work...it would absolutely rock. It could have wireless 4 player or 4 player online...that would totally rock.

Well it would lose analog control for moves, that isn't the only thing in the game. Touch control may be left out. Online play would certainly kick a$$.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

It already exists, it just uses anime characters instead of Nintendo characters. It's called Jump Ultimate Stars, and it's one of the best DS games ever made. http://youtube.com/watch?v=tlaJw_TUoTc

So, I guess in answer to your question: yes, it can be done, it already has been done (and very capably). There is no touch control, but there is online multiplayer, and it's easy to play even without speaking Japanese (there is a full guide on gamefaqs).

The issue with a SSB DS is that it would be very difficult to fit all the action onto the small DS screen.

Send me a message if you want to be Wii friends.

JUS does that capably as well.  Even with 4 players.  Hell, it even supports 56 completely unique playable characters, 41 levels, dozens of items, over 100 support characters, and over 300 help characters (basically stat boosters).  The game is gigantic, and infinitely more complex than SSB.  All they have to do is make the game 2D (which isn't really a problem) and SSB can be done very well on the DS.

Well, it can be fit vertically, as Jump Ultimate Stars have done

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking.  I wouldn't have a problem with the game going 2D to make it fit on a handheld and think it could be a lot of fun.

If they did it anything like JUS I would love it. The gameplay, the online, and the game itself are handled VERY well. Nothing wrong with 2D either. Well drawn 2D sprites on a fighting game like SSB are just as good as 3D sprites IMO.

Oh wow...JUS looks so cool...so many characters too! I know a majority of the characters...I should import this...I don't know any Japanese...but whatever.
