Shacknews is now reporting that it has confirmed the news, and that Xbox Live Silver members can play certain 360 titles online — including Shadowrun, Universe at War, and Lost Planet: Colonies Edition. This is the first time any game has allowed you to play online on Xbox 360 without an Xbox Live Gold account, which we can likely trace back to Microsoft’s recent decision to make Games for Windows Live free.

I remember hearing when Halo 3 launched that Silver members could play online matches, but only with friends. Can anyone clarify?

I have actually tried to have friends with Silver in my party and went to the matchmaking lobby.  It said they can't load information or something like that.  I don't have a source to back just an experience with it.

I wouldn't want Live to be free. Everything we have on Live we have because we pay for it. A lot of the money is going back into Live to make it better every year. If Live were free it would just sit still and not improve anymore. I don't mind spending $40 more a year on a better experience. I would pay that much again for my Wii too if it would get it anywhere close to Live.

Smart move from MS. By tempting games into playing online on "weaker" games, its a real incentive for them to join Gold to play online for ALL games.

Also helps boost sales of specific titles.

(be a bit sucky if you buy the Windows version, and can play online for free - but buy the 360 version and NOT do the same).

MS will NOT make XBL FREE. Its too much of a money cow for them - they have no desire to lose $200-$400m (US) cash per year.

My thoughts - Its a glitch when they made XBL free for PC players. That's why its only going to last till they release a patch.

MS screwed up and now pretending it was done on purpose as a limited offer...

Blah!
