I wouldn't want Live to be free. Everything we have on Live we have because we pay for it. A lot of the money is going back into Live to make it better every year. If Live were free it would just sit still and not improve anymore. I don't mind spending $40 more a year on a better experience. I would pay that much again for my Wii too if it would get it anywhere close to Live.
