After watching a few movies in HD and in SD I have to say, in many cases, there isn't much of an improvement. I'm certainly not going to rebuy more than a few Blu-Ray versions of DVDs that I own. I certainly won't be buying any new Blu-Ray movies until they are much cheaper. I know that new DVDs come out at $20, but many new DVDs I don't buy. I buy stuff that has been out for a while and runs about $10 or less. The Blu-Ray versions stay up there in price.

I give this thread a 9.6.

huh? Even my grandma can easily tell the difference with the movies I have. Do you have an HDTV? And what movies are they?

Yes I have an HDTV.  I watched Matrix (all 3), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Planet Earth and a few other movies I can't think of off the top of my head.  Of what I have seen, Planet Earth was the largest improvement.  I find that I notice the difference more in shots of landscape than in action movies.  I didn't say that there was no improvement, I said there wasn't much of an improvement in most cases, certainly not enough for me to run out and pay $25-$30 for it.  To further narrow what I would pay for, I'm not going to run out and buy BR comedies and dramas over cheaper DVD versions.

I give at post a 9.4.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

@Dno: Again, I wouldn't have a problem with it if they were talking about new releases.

To be totally clear - I'm talking about the difference between "top selling movies this week" and "top selling Blu-Ray movies this week". See what I mean? The DVD committee could start publishing statistics based on "top selling DVD movies this week", and then Blu-Ray wouldn't look as good since it would be an unfair comparison.

Not surprised they always think ahead and soon will be the top dog...

Well, is the visual/audio really much better enough to warrant the extra cost? I dont think so

Depends on your TV, sound system and movie category.

Would I buy a romatic comedy for more money on BluRay? No. Is there a big difference on a 26" TV? No.

But if you have a nice TV and a movie that lives from its beautiful pictures. (300, Superman, any Pixar movie, Pirates ...) it is really worth it. I really wait for Lord of the Rings on BluRay. This will be ever more true when the prices converge and the TVs get better.

im sorry but i dont ever listen to anyone who says DVDs are almost or are even close to Blu-rays... it just...i just... its just i dont understand if these people have actually seen it....

Anyone who says the are "close" is sadly mistaken and a lil ignorant.

but you do need the right set up so if you are watching it on a 720p 20 inch TV yea i guess you are right.. lol

I have a 40 inch 1080p TV (sony of course) and 5.1 surrond sound. let me tell you the difference is not only visaul but its also in the sound.....

To sum it up its a HUGE difference.

Imagine movies A, B and C, all available both on DVD and Blu-Ray.

On a certain week, the top selling movies are:

1- A
2- B
3- C

However, the top selling BR movies are:

1- B
2- A
3- C

And the top selling DVD movies are:

1- A
2- B
3- C

The top movie is either A or B depending on which method you use, and that will affect the market share percentages.

This really depends on your TV size and distance to screen. Upscaled DVDs look amazing on 720p Screens although you see some artifacts. BluRay is much better but its really your choice if you want to pay 2 times the price for it in Europe. For me it depends on the movie.

but its also in the sound.....

doubt it. Physiologically CD quality is enough for stereo sound. You will not hear higher bitrates etc. I am no expert for surround sound but I am pretty sure its similar there. Your sound system will make a MUCH bigger difference than any additional byte of audio information you get out of the bluRay disc.

DTS HD and 5.1HD is only on blu-ray and HD DVD... but i could be wrong but i went out with a sound expert friend and bought a surrond sound system that works with this "new" sound that blu-rays come with

Sony uses Uncompressed sound which is not on DVD

But if it is on DVDs i could be wrong. if someone can back that up then let me no.

But as far as i no now these are not done on a regular DVD. In fact all ive seen on DVD is 5.1 DD

Your right my sound system will make it better thats why i got it but it makes it better because it supports DTS HD and DVDs do not lol. if i am mistaken please let me now but i dont think i am.

I'm sorry, but these "Market Share Statistics" are 100% propaganda and are designed to mislead you on the popularity of Blu-Ray.

Because Blu-Ray is a new format it has very little in the way of choice, no back catelogue, no budget movies, and a disproportionate number of movie collectors which skew the numbers when you look at market share on a per-title basis. Today I could walk into my local electronics store and pick up The Princess Bride on DVD, or pick up a $5 DVD when I go grocery shopping, and my movie sale is not calculated into the market share for DVD. Now, new-release movies account for a large portion of movie sales but they do not account for all movie sales, and they may not even account for most movie sales; if you want to make a claim that Blu-Ray accounts for 5% or 10% of DVD sales then either Blu-Ray has to account for a larger portion than that of new release titles or Blu-Ray should account for that percentage of movies which are currently unavilable in HD.

@ happy
right thats all a big fat duh that BD movies are not in bargin bins lol
People this is about GROWTH and if people are buying NEW releases then its good thats all
