Forums - Sony - An update on the Blu-ray/DVD war.

@alpha_dk: Nice analysis. I wonder how much market share Blu-Ray has on all new releases (most comparison measures I've seen are unfair to either DVD or BR).

On a side note, if there was any doubt that Onimusha12 is GGE, that new sig pretty much proves it.

As in go buy us some coffee.

I'm not ashamed to say i own 0 blu-ray films. Why? Well, is the visual/audio really much better enough to warrant the extra cost? I dont think so

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

After watching a few movies in HD and in SD I have to say, in many cases, there isn't much of an improvement. I'm certainly not going to rebuy more than a few Blu-Ray versions of DVDs that I own. I certainly won't be buying any new Blu-Ray movies until they are much cheaper. I know that new DVDs come out at $20, but many new DVDs I don't buy. I buy stuff that has been out for a while and runs about $10 or less. The Blu-Ray versions stay up there in price.

I give this thread a 9.6.

huh? Even my grandma can easily tell the difference with the movies I have. Do you have an HDTV? And what movies are they?

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

In Europe everything is expensive. A PS3 costs $700, yet people are still buying it.

even worse it costed 1200$ at release.

Actually about $800, now $600. Still too much though.

Hmm, pie.

First of all, is that percentage based on revenue or unit sales?

Second, does that 8% statistic refer to the same thing as the statistics in this thread? If so, that's quite misleading. They're taking the top selling Blu-Ray movies and calculating the percentages of those movies. I don't think I have to explain why those statistics are misleading...

if more people are buying new releases on Blu-ray and less people are buying them on DVD then its not misleading.... people are buying BD thats what its about. DVD been out forever of you have to only count NEW releases or it makes no sense. Its about BD GROWTH over last year which was what 200%?

Thats what you should be taking from this. BD will be the next media thats pretty much a given at this point.

Where did I say anyhing about new releases? I said "top selling Blu-Ray movies", not "top selling movies". If that's how they're calculating this percentage, it's like me taking the top selling 360 multiplat games and then claiming the 360 has a huge advantage over the PS3.

But again, I'm not sure exactly how these statistics work since I don't care much about the format war.

but again its not top selling its "best selling for the week" no matter what you said its wrong... blu-ray has had a 200% increase over last year and DVD has had a decline... so again its blu-rays GROWTH you should be taking from this thread nuthin esle.

Depends on your TV, sound system and movie category.

Would I buy a romatic comedy for more money on BluRay? No. Is there a big difference on a 26" TV? No.

But if you have a nice TV and a movie that lives from its beautiful pictures. (300, Superman, any Pixar movie, Pirates ...) it is really worth it. I really wait for Lord of the Rings on BluRay. This will be ever more true when the prices converge and the TVs get better.

That's what I meant, sorry for not being clear... Sure, Blu-Ray is growing, I never denied that. I'm just saying that taking the best selling Blu-Ray  movies (no matter whether it's weekly or total sales) as the only evidence is cherry picking and misleading (but not worse than the typical PR spin).

Bluray has one big advantage over DVD its the playstation3.As ps3 sales would start to increase Bluray would completely take over the DVD format.

ooo if you look at it in a whole you are correct. im sorry for not understanding what you meant. i mean some DVDs are like 5 bucks of course its a different picture but what companies, studios and EVERYONE who wants to make money on DVDs/Blu-rays are not looking at bargin bins.

They make the most money on full price NEW releases. so this info is excalty what fox, WB, etc is looking for.

With any electronic compnay they wonna sell millions in the first week not over time. So this is why i think they only track NEW releases because thats what is MOST important.
