I was thinking with the fact that this is a video game tracking site, and it is obviously not tracking each unit (since it is impossible to do and even NPD represents 50-60% of sales) why not round the numbers in the sales figures. Havind a number like 12328 makes me feel that there were exactly 12328 units sold, and if it turns out wrong the number will lose credibility, while if the numbers are more like 12330 or 12300, it definitely reminds me that this is just an extrapolation of existing data.

So does anybody else agree with me on this?

To ioi : By the way, keep up the good work. It is hard to stay neutral in such a fanboy infested environment (I mean in the internet not necassarily this site)

if the numbers were rounded to 12330 it would make me think there were exactly 12330 units sold. just because a number ends in a 0 doesnt mean it must be rounded.

its like making a big deal about 360 reaching 10m units sold. what you mean its sold 1 more than 999,999! no way!

Not if all the numbers were rounded out. If only one number was 12330 yeah that could make me feel that it was exactly that number, but when all the numbers are rounded it loses the precisness. Also one more than 999,999 will be 1 million not 10 million.

My point is that when other surfers visit the website, they see these precise numbers. Even if the numbers are off by 5%, they feel that the numbers are wrong. Yeah maybe for us here these numbers seem correct, but not for a new user. Most professional statistics analysts work in this matter. Not in increments, just rounding.

It is not harder to obtain these numbers, just the same.

@ plaque of locusts: I should note that although we would like him to have precise numbers and be able to track everything, he can't and his numbers are good estimates at best. What I was proposing was not to imply that the numbers are exact.

@eepicolo: Yes true rounding the numbers will be as artifial as keeping them as they are, but rounding them gives them the uncertainness they deserve.

Anyways, I just felt it was more professional to handel the numbers in this way, and in order for that beta sign to come down, I thought the site could look more professional in this way.

Around the Network

I was wondering the same thing the other day.

Don't get me wrong, I understand your point and appreciate the logic. I'm just pointing out the benefit of the way it's done now. The benefit in the present method which I brought up, compared to the benefit of the change your suggesting, really comes out pretty much even; both are minor issues. That's why I'd say just leave it be. Let ioi stick solely to his formula without having to artificially modify the numbers, regardless of the fact that they're just estimates anyway. If you have faith in his methods, then theoretically the precise numbers he comes up with will on average be more accurate than rounded figures (theoretically, if you have faith).

When it comes right down to it, though, I won't be heartbroken either way.

Prediction: Wii passes 360 in US between July - September 2008. (Wii supply will be the issue to watch, and barring any freak incidents between now and then as well.) - 6/5/08; Wow, came true even earlier. Wii is a monster.

What's the big deal anyway?

ioi already has the code for the rounded estimates, and he is currently using the code for "exact" estimates.
