Removing the launches for the respective consoles, the 360 is generally outselling the PS3 world wide. However, they're both selling very poorly although it seems as though PS3 sales are slowing even faster than 360 sales.
Including a launch and a near post-launch in the comparison is sort of silly, because the sales are artificially high when the unit is introduced to a market. Once the sales level off, you get to see how they compare.
I have a Wii now but want a 360. Honestly, the whole failure thing has be disguisted, and as much as I lothe things Sony has done with the PS3 and their general dishonesty with the customer, consistent overpromising and under delivering, I would buy a PS3 instead of a 360 if it had as many games that I wanted. By the time the 360's failure rate is reasonable (ie: 3-5% or better -- that would probably still be the worst of this generation), the PS3 may be priced more reasonably and may win my interest.
It is unbelievable how Microsoft is dropping the ball this generation. They have been gift-wrapped an opportunity to dominate the high end of the console business and they're just losing it. Their pricing isn't even that much above Nintendo's -- you can get a core system for $50 more than a Wii, and yet people are paying a premium of more than $50 to buy a Wii online since they're scarce.
