Forums - Sales - Will Super Monkey Ball be iPhone's first million seller?

No, I'm not dreaming stuff up. According to Sega of America's president Simon Jeffrey, they expect to sell a million downloads of Super Monkey Ball on iPhone. This is the source. There are other really interesting things in that article besides that. Apparently, the top 5 of all paid apps are all games, and the top 10 has 7 games. Also, according to the article, games can be as big as 100 MB. I suppose that limit is set by Apple, I don't think there are any technical limitations for a game to be even bigger than that, so maybe at some point Apple can up the size limit if it becomes a problem.

Another interesting thing is that the article hints at sales figures becoming available after a few weeks. If that's true, that would be awesome, but I have my doubts. If you read this, you'll know why. I really hope those are just launch related problems and things will get smoother and Apple will give more information and better service to all devs, but who knows. But to be completely honest, if the devs don't know how much their app is selling, that kinda sucks big time.

Anyway, back to the original topic. If Super Monkey Ball reaches a million downloads, that means a minimum of $7 million of revenue for Sega, and probably a bit more since the price in Europe is €7.99 which at current rates is about $12.5. That would be an insane ROI for Sega

Obligatory dick measuring Gaming Laptop Specs: Sager NP8270-GTX: 17.3" FULL HD (1920X1080) LED Matte LC, nVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M, Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3, 750GB SATA II 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive

Well, the last time Sega predicted something that we all thought was absurd, it ended up selling well above even their expectations.

Congrats to the iPhone, I'm amazed the people who own it even play games.

Does this include the ipod touch

In reality its hard to tell whether it is likely to happen as its one of the first major games made for the device.

I would expect so, since they're both capable of running the same software.

I don't think it's a million seller yet, but Sega thinks it will be. To say so, they must know how well it's really selling. Of course, they may base this on an assumption that games on App Store will have longer legs, it's hard to say just now without any sales figures...

Yes, both run the same iPhone OS 2.0 so at least in theory, both will be able to run the same games. From the article:

"[Sega of America's president] Jeffery said he believes a certain number of consumers will buy the iPod Touch primarily as a gaming device, pitting it against established portable gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DS and the Sony PlayStation Portable."

I don't know if that's really the case, 'cause the iPod touch is so much more expensive than DS or PSP, but that's his opinion. By the way, does anybody know how much the iPod touch has sold? I've only seen figures of the iPhone...

I wouldent be surprised at all ... did any of you seen how many mobile phone game development companies announce that their game just passed the million or 3 million lately ? If not , go and check out pocketgamer.co.uk ;)

Impressive ? Not at all if you ask me . With the hype monster its getting to have a million seller at that price is not a big deal ...

To a degree, that's true. However, the installed base for Java-games to sell to is at least an order of magnitude greater than the installed base of iPhone OS 2.0. Given that, I think a million seller on the iPhone is quite a big deal.
