Nope -- i choose PS1 over N64 because i felt like a PS1... i was only 8 yrs old - so i didn't know PS1 was the market leader.
i got a PS2 since it had FF games, PS1 was great, and i had played the majority of good Xbox games since my friends all had Xbox's...
i got a DS since it had better games at the time.
I got a PS3 since i wanted one - due to wanting GoW3, FFXIII, FF verses XIII, GT5, Rachet and Clank, new Team ICO games, DMC4, etc.
I got a PSP for FFT, FFVII:CC, LocoRoco, GoW:CoO, etc.
I plan on getting a Wii and a 360 in the future but am currently waiting on the right timing -- unfortunately i keep buying good PS3/PSP/DS games during holidays and am busy with uni / social life during Uni semester...
I got a PS3 because it had good games (GTA IV, MGS4) and Blu-ray. I don't give a shit if it's the market leader as long as there are good games on it.
I'm buying a wii just for that. Market leaders get the best third party support, thus I'll be enjoying the best games. I'm just waiting for the support to start coming.

I got a Wii because it was the cheapest, and I was mostly into Nintendo games at the time. It has proven a wise choice, since it's the only that really gives a different experience to the PC, and emphasizes the strengths of consoles vs PCs.
The 360 and PS3 will probably enter my collection in a few years when they're cheaper, but I'm in no hurry to get them yet.
I usually end up with all consoles in a generation, with at least one on launch day. The only exception with me, so far, has been SEGA systems before the Dreamcast.
To actually spend money on, only Nintendo consoles since I agree with what they do mostly. Love their IPs too. Also, I can't afford to support more than one console with software so...

I bought a Xbox360 because there was not other console available. I plan on buying a Ps3 when socom comes out. I will not own another nintendo console as I am not a kid anymore.
Well, I have only bought four consoles new:
Intellivision -- hardly the market leader
Coleco ADAM -- it does not count because I returned it broken and it was a flop.
Commodore 64 -- in pitched battle with Atari 8-bit in 1984
Wii -- Was not the market leader when I bought it in April 2007
Using the theory in the OP, those who gravitate toward market leader consoles would have Xbox 360s since it was the leader for much of this generation (and until a couple of months ago, still held the lead in the Americas).
Basically, I buy my consoles used, late or after the cycle, unless they are really fun.
(It should be noted that I do not own an Xbox 360 or PS3 but have an Xbox, PS2, GC, DC, N64, PS1, Saturn, Jag, 3D0, SNES, Genesis, TG-16, SMS, NES, etc.)
I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |
I got a NES probably because it was the main console of the time, our house had an Atari 2600 prior to that, as well as 3 arcade consoles in the basement. My brothers and my parents were always into videogames since I was little, so the progression to the NES was probably natural with a bit of buzz.
I cant remember what made me want a SNES, but I never regretted owning it. By this point, I was strongly attached to the Zelda series. So my N64, GC and Wii were mostly due to following the Zelda series. Ironically, I don't have the DS Zelda game yet.
So, I'd say its mostly for a specific IP more than anything else. I'm just lucking out now that the Wii is getting some serious 3rd party attention so I can also play games like Guitar Hero, COD5 and Dead Rising.
