wow, why does Sega's last report concerning Genesis say it shipped 30.75m yet this reports that this many years later they have only sold 29m. Are there still ~1.75m sitting on retails shelves?

I think these numbers need to be clarified with http://vgchartz.com/worldcons.php where we can see the last shipped figures. The last fiscal report is from 2007 and all of those should easily be 'sold' by now, in fact the current gen machines have higher sales than those shipped figures by now.

I wish ioi would update that page with the last couple of reports.

http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/multimedia/2007/05/gallery_game_history?slide=21

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Mega_Drive

these sites say 29 million SEGA Genesis units sold. Hard to really say whos number are more accurate. If only SEGA would make a site showing their systems' worldwide sales numbers.

I think their fiscal report is the most accurate. That is why the vgc data from the link above must be the most accurate. Those sites you reference are referncing the last media discussion about the Genesis, whereas the vgc one is for the last total number of units shipped, which by now MUST be equal to sold.

Edit: your wikipedia article uses your wired.com article as a reference. Basically, you only have one source that has no source.

but where does VG Chartz get their numbers from?

Oh for the love of god. Did you not actually read my post or the page I posted?

1. The http://vgchartz.com/worldcons.php pages is a list of shipped figures taken directly from the companies fiscal reports.

2. For all non-currently selling systems, basic logic would dictate that those shipped figures must be equal to sold figures after a year.

3. Combine 1 & 2 and you must realize that Sega's last fiscal report that included Genesis had a lifetime shipped figure of 30.75m and since that was many years ago its lifetime sold must also be 30.75m.

I don't think I could make it any clearer than that.

I understand that. I would just like to see the actual reports and not just what VG Chartz said the numbers were. I mean VG Chartz should have a link to the actual fiscal reports. I mean it is public record after all. Plus the chart only shows sales figures up to March of 2007. Those numbers are over a year old.

Actually that's not neccessarily true.  I remember back when the Wii was passing N64 in Japan first we heard that it passed N64 sales.  Then it passed N64 shipments.

It seemed odd but somebody else explained that a bunch of N64s that never sold were tossed.  Can Source or somebody more familiar with the matter clarify or just tell me i'm remembering a weird dream and it never happened?

^I think the old Japanese SALES will be taken straight from Famitsu or Media Create (ioi didn't track anything back then) so it's probably just an error on their part, they missed some sales (I would say that they might stop tracking after going so low, except I am sure I saw a weekly Media Create which had 1 sale of GBA original version on it.

I have a hard time believing almost 200k N64s were just chucked.

good, soon the Wii will enter the top 5 consoles of all time, its a great console and truly deserves these great sales

PS2 was at 129m shipped through March 31, 2008. I really think Kaz mispoke when he said it passed 140m. It should be in the low to mid 130m range for shipments through June 30, 2008

Game Boy Micro is a variant of the GBA so it should it be in with the other 2

Quite likely.  Even Jack had said the PS3 was only 4 million units behind the 360.

Yeah I know. Hard to beleive huh? To think both systems were made to compete with the Panasonic 3DO. Which in itself was not all that successful.

The 3DO and CD-i sold for almost 700 dollars at release. While the Jaguar was much cheaper (250) it did not have the software support.

You should have specified home consoles, and even then, why does it matter? The Wii isn't desperately looking for achievements, there's no reason to say that it's the ______ best selling HOME console ever when it could end up being the 2nd best selling console ever anyways (behind the DS).

Also, color me unimpressed. It's still early in this generation of course, but the market is growing very quickly and a lot of home consoles have been failures or have done average at best (this is the first generation where it might not be wide dominance for the winning console).

SNES- 49 million
MegaDrive - 30 million
TurboGrafx - 10 million (wiki)
Neo-Geo - ???
CDi - 500k

Still even without NeoGeo it was barely huge dominance for the SNES. 49:40

According to serial numbers less than 400k Neo-Geos were produced, but they (basically) all sold.
