Hard to say.... Back when Fox and Warner were just about ready to side with HD DVD, Sony paid off Fox with 120 million to go blu ray. Warner followed suit and got 400 million in payouts.

If MS's console had been vested in HDDVD, maybe there would have been significant counteroffers, or maybe with the year headstart of the xbox, the install base would have tipped the other companies earlier.

I think you need to provide a link to the above statement.

Maybe you are confused by the 150 million that Microsoft paid to Paramount for exclusive HDDVD support.  My link -> http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/21/technology/21disney.html?fta=y

Whoah, wasn't expecting to get these defensive replies from people... thought it was common knowledge, just like the Paramount deal you so kindly linked :P  http://gizmodo.com/344680/the-real-reason-warner-went-blu+ray

Also. No... i don't see HD-DVD winning. At best it would of had a split market.

Japan was already HEAVILY invested in Blu-ray before HD-DVD hit the market.

Really Toshiba should look to sell China HD-DVD. I know some chinese economists have suggested they go with their own media format after they got screwed by DVD. This would save them the trouble of having to invent one.

HD DVD was never going to win the war, purely on the back of Sony being experts in the high definition market (see the bravia)

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Fox joined the Blu-ray association years earlier than Warner.

Yes, Fox was already aligned with Blu Ray.  But, Warner was ready to side with HD DVD if another studio aligned with the format, and Fox was the least reliable blu ray partner.  They were ready to switch to HD DVD, but were paid a sum to remain with Bluray.  Warner then decided it was in their best interest to also take a payout and effectively decide the format war then and there with 4 studios out of 6

That makes no sense. Why would Fox just switch for no reason, especially since Blu-ray was owning the market? They would have had to have a massive payout for that, more then 120 million.

You shouldn't put too much stock into one shoddy article that is going off of what one person said. This was also denied by the studios.

The hell if I understand the motivations behind the companies :P  I'm assuming that Fox would have received a payout from the HD DVD camp, maybe some kind of licensing benefits?

Just to make things clear, I'm not posting that information as an attack on Sony, I think MS and Sony are both ultimately evil organizations intent on raping our wallets, and there was I believe an inside source on the Fox payout that was slipped and then covered up quickly by Fox

If HD DVD would have been in 360, it would have been behind PS3 from the beginning.

Do you reckon HD-DVD would have won the format war if the XBOX 360 had it built in

No but the 360 would have died a fiery death. Starting one year earlier and cheaper was its only possibility at being successful. Sony paid a high price for including the BluRay drive.

This is a complete and utter lie.
