The development of FFXIII is PC-based, and the main reason of this is to reduce the cost of development, which is why many companies are doing that right now. Capcom, for example, is developing for PC first and port it to consoles (DMC4, SFIV, Bionic Commando, etc... are all developed on PC first). Ofcourse, when they're developing for PC they're probably taking to mind to develop the games that would translate well for consoles, which probably results in a unoptimized version for PC.

Tell me shio, how do they program it along with the environment of the ps3? Is there like an emulator or something that lets them know how well the program is keeping up?
"keep in mind to develop games that would translate well"? Is that what programming has come down to nowadays?
Programmer: Hmm yeah i think this would work, no real way to test that theory, but i'll keep the console in mind of what it is capable of.

It's developed using Squares own tools on a PC. Dev kit are just PC's with emulators and tools for developing. The assets, art work, most of the code are standard 3d studio max or C/C++/whatever.
Crystal tools is probably a set of tools that streamline all this but also were built to turn these PC programs into 360/PS3 apps pretty easily.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

How does that prove they're wrong if you're taking a poll from people who don't work for Square-Enix?; Especially when there hasn't been in game footage released for the game yet. It makes no sense. I don't see the relevance for people to jump to the conclusion that there is a port but at the same time, I don't see the point of posting a topic simply to rile everyone up again over something that's not even near being confirmed whether it's true of false. |
Well this was quoted directly from someone who works for SE
1:24 - Turns out the answer is "It's hard to explain, but we're doing it." To clarify (thanks cute clarification lady!) they're building it on a PC, for the PS3 then will be working on porting to 360.

To clear up my post above...
To say it's a port or not isn't so easy. Most games are running (at least in part) on a PC before they get put on a console. That doesn't make them a port.
It's really not complicated (in theory) and should be easy to understand.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

sorry steven but to clarify, do you think the program is being worked out for the specs and environment of the ps3.
We understand that the programs are run on the PC using PC programs, but the games are not actually made to run on PC. They are made to run according to the program, that is designed to run on the ps3 or other consoles.
Meaning, a PC based PS3 environment.
If that is the case, then that code is designed for the console, not the pc. A pc is virtually limitless compared to a console. There must be a ceiling, which would be the enivironment.
What is your vote sir?
EDIT: saw that clarification man :P you're quick, you beat me to it.

The PS3 version is a port.
The 360 version is a port.
The development platform for this game, is the PC (ironically a platform the game is not coming out for).
Does this mean the PS3 version will be of less quality then if they had developed it natively on the PS3? No.

like i've said before obviously the game is developed on a pc, but it is almost as obvious to realize that it is being done within a ps3 environment, which can then be easily translated to other systems because of the engine and coding strategies.

The games is developed on a PC for PS3. I don't think it's your regular PC though.
