First note that Sony reports units shipped to retailers not sold to customers, see my sig for more info on that.

Now, this shipped number actually includes sales from 2006 as well which were, according to Sony's shipped numbers, around 1.66 million units leaving them with 8.83 million shipped in 2007.

As it stands right now Sony will likely ship around 14m units during this Calendar year leaving them with around 24m units shipped LTD at years end.

Back on topic however, on average you could be right,

1.6, 8.8, 14, 18, 18, 13, 9, 9, 6, 4.6, 2= 106M

106/10.2 = ~10.4M per year on average.

Uhm, no.

PS3 is not going to have a 10 year life span as Sony's lead console. Sure, it'll probably do 10m or more per year for the next 2, 3, 4 years, but Sonywill eventually introduce the PS4, and that will kill PS3 sales.

Just like the PS2 immediately dropped off the market when the PS3 came out. ;)

PS2 was still very relevant.  The PS3 likely won't have the same market relevancy meaning it will die far more quickly such as the Xbox and GC did.

Something to note real quick, MS and Nintendo didn't kill off the Xbox and GC, the market did.   The market dictates how long a console lasts, not the whims of the company CEO or president.

No, there's no way in hell. The "10 year life cycle" for the PS3 is questionable as it is and would likely only keep around if Sony decides to keep the PS3 on shelves well after the PS4 is selling and the PS3 is not. The only hope that the PS3 would sell at all would be if the PS4 doesn't support PS3 backward compatibility.

That's how Sony intends to keep the PS2 around for 10 years, despite plunging sales.

The difference between the PS2 and PS3 is cost and Sony has no motivation to keep losing money on the PS3. If the PS3 isn't making money at a reasonable price (say, $199) by year 6 when the PS4 comes out, expect Sony to axe it outright.

you forget that the PS3, like every othe product ever made, has a lifecycle. right now it has just entered the growth phase. next year its sales may increase by 50%, the year after that perhaps it will grow by 65% and year on year it will slowly have rising sales and in 5 years maybe it would have reach maturity and begin its descent into decline where it will lose sales year on year for another 4 years perhaps. It will sell over 100 million if sonys 10 year plan works but I think a 7-8 year life is far more likely as the wii will be replaced by then and the 360 will more than likely have a successor and a respective date announced.

Agree, such a thing like the 10 year plan only works if you are the clear winner...

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

Ps2 sales:

2001: 16.5M

2002: 21.6M

2003: 19.2M

2004: 16M

2005: 17.8M

2006: 12.4M

2007: 9.7M

The Ps2 didn't manage to stay above 10M for more than 6 years (well, almost 7). Do you honestly believe the Ps3 will keep it for 10 years?
