Forums - Sony - Sony sets 150m sales target for PS3,PS2 passes 140 million units !

By the way guys, BKK2 found an article about Mexican sales and Latin American sales - Mexico accounts for 1/2 of Latin America sales, and Latin America = 2% total hardware sales worldwide.

I guess this is relating to official channels and doesn't account for parallel import.

Also, that statistic perhaps has been done with consolidated data, a couple of years old, but Latin America's economy is fastly growing, although at a quite wonky pace, I wouldn't be surprised if currently that percentage would be 2.5% or more and if it would reach even more than 5% in the next 5 years.

Source of Belief: Theory that PS3 will have extremely enlongated life-span.

Problems with Theory: Marketleaders typically do. PS4 will be miles better than PS3 (Since they learn from their mistakes) so PS3 will have no purpose. Blu-Ray players are cheaper.

I agree that PS4 will be better, if not for other reasons, at least because in 5 years Sony will be able to put more computing power and useful/enjoyable features into it for less money, but in 5 years PS3 components too will be a lot cheaper, so when PS4 comes, PS3 could keep on survive as low end model, priced below $150.

Latin America is a huge market but again, your not going to sell 5 million PS2s in 6 months. Even if its 500 million, 700 million, 1 billion or whatever number of people, you have maybe 50 million who are wealthy enough and educated enough to want a videogame console, and they aren't going to buy 5 million consoles in six months. Just look at the USA or Japan - two areas in love with videogames - and with a wide net of wealthy enough people - and they rarely ever buy 5 million consoles in six months.

The population of South America is 371,000,000

Yes, and the population of India is 1,300,000,000 yet you don't see ginormous sales there.

I think piracy is killing software (and movies and music) sales for > 50% the world population

It's not piracy so much as over 50% of the world can't afford to pay the prices stuff costs.

untill a price cut the ps3 wont be able to speed up its sales because most people dont spend 400 dollars on a counsel unless ur an actual gamer.... and i deffinalty dont think the ps2 will have much longer on the market once its worldwide sales reach below 50,000 to 60,000 a week most stores arent going to be selling many so they wont be making a profit and it will be wasted space on their shelves where they could just hold more ps3/wiis/360

I do see ps3 sales going up, and probably 3 years from now will be the most succesfull in sales; however, I dont think that that will be enough to make up for the slugish start of the console.

an extra note. an average price of a ps3 in Mexico is about $800 dollas, so dont expect any big support in sales from , I guess, latin america.

Wii:$ 480
xbox:$ 650

Thats some big cojones Kaz has saying that, already the other Fanbots are tossing this piece of news like a dead animal carcass. I don't know but it seems everyone forgets how HD is Today's and The Future, an HD setup will be incomplete without a PS3. Wii is an accessory, and the 360 is getting old...

I don't think we will see any rumors of new consoles until 2010, also, I don't think MS would want to cut the life of the 360 just yet. they have a good thing coming on wih their 360. thst means that they actually going to recover the inversion in the original Xbox.

Does all this talk about Sony's projected future sales and "things going according to plan" have anything per chance to do with the recent announcement of losing exclusivity of FF13? Perhaps all these announcements from Sony are them desperately trying to reassure the consumer just as when they flooded the market with info about the PS4 when things looked their worst for the PS3 to reassure everyone the Playstation wasn't going anywhere?

I haven't seen this much "Future Proof" spinning since 2007. Anyone else see what I'm seeing or is my contribution here just antagonistic?

Reassuring customers and partners is not bad, remember that knowing XBox 1 was doomed to a very short life helped a lot killing it.

If Bosch keeps on selling (and providing support for) its now quite ageing and little changed food processor for an awful lot of money, PS3 could well become a commodity, once priced below $150.

Somehow the Wii had to get brought in here.

Anyhoo.

It's entirely possible that with ten years it could do 150 million. They'd have to keep pace with at least 15 million for the next few years, with a couple approaching twenty.

Not entirely unlikely, seeing as that Sony does believe in the whole 10 year lifespan thing (look @ the PS2). A lower price point would do wonders.

Nintendo also said the GC would live 10 years. Look what happened.

Personally I think Sony REALLY needs to shut up about the 10 year thing. The PS3 isn't going to last that long, sorry. The PS2 is barely selling now and it's on its 9th year. Do they really think the PS3 will have a shot then when the Wii is goign to be the #1 console and the 360 is eating up PS3 exclusives anyway?

Arrogancy isn't going to get them anywhere.

Do you have a source for that claim?

He is right althought the number is wrong. If I remember correclty was Miyamoto that hinted at life cycle almost double of that of N64. He said around 7 - 8 years.

However you must think that Nintendo forecasted for GC LTD sales around 50 million. The goal was cleary missed in the beginning.

Iwata started in 2003 the refoundation of the company that brought , following Yamauchi desire, the company to disrupt the industry and make unprecedent profits.

plus, most of the wealthy people already imported a PS3 or Wii, not even mentioning the PS2.
