Forums - Sony - Sony ditches B/C in order to keep PS2 alive...

Just a theory i just thought off, and i probably won't be the first.

As long as the PS3's aren't Backwards Compatible, the PS2 remains as an affordable console with a very very large gamebase. This way the lifecycle of the Ps2 will be stretched with at least a few years. With the current announcements at E3 it looks like sony wants to be a big player with 3 consoles/handhelds on the market...

Is this Sony's business strategy, or do they really have to keep the production costs of the ps3 low?

I'd say, very smart move, certainly since ps3 is slowly gaining ground and the ps2 is still selling very well.

(although personally i haven't bought a ps3 yet because of the lack of BC here in Europe)

They need to keep the PS3 afloat so yeah, your theory about sums it up. PS2 will have a 15 year lifespan probably.

The PS2 is already dying. In Japan it is consistently below the PS3 and in the US there are only a few multiplatform releases (GH4, Madden, NCAA) that will keep the thing alive a little longer. Two more years max, imo.

They wanted to save 30$ on each emotion chip.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

no , they just think that they sold enough consoles with BC and they want to reduce productios costs ,,,
the good thing is that they can produce ps3 with BC again any neccesary time ;)

No, it was to reduce costs of the PS3. It saves them about $35 a box, but if you multiply $35 by 100 million its alot of savings. BC would actually help keep the PS2 alive longer and help sell more PS3's

PS2 is still going strong,(which is great) they will keep it on the market for about 3 more years or so....by that time the PS3 will be profitable and will be cheaper
so i love what SONY is doing(by taking bc out of PS3) at this time

No. It's just that not having B/C saves sony money on the ps3.

They weren't too concerned when the ps3 launched.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need...
