Forums - Sony - Nazna's PS3 Impressions

So I've had my PS3 for about a day and a half now, and have played it for about 8 hours (mostly demos).  More like 10 if you count Planet Earth on Blu-ray.  Figured I'd give some impressions on the console.  Note: This is not a review.  I don't like reviewing consoles, as it's an ever-changing experience.  Just giving some thoughts.

Setup: So, I bought a 20GB Playstaiton 3.  No Wi-fi, as you all know, but I didn't need it since my router literally sits in my entertainment center.  I have my PS3 hooked up to an HDMI port in my 42" Plasma via a spare HDMI cable I had from my old upscaling DVD player which died.  There were 3 cords in all to plug in, and then I went through the set up process.  The first thing I did was update the firmware, then I went online and created my PSN ID. It took me about 30 minutes in all from plugging it in to getting the ID set up.  Abot what I would expect.  Fairly straightforward.

Interface:  The XMB is very simple, but functional.  Personally, this is what I like.  It's not going to blow anyone away, but you'll never get lost in it.  There are some pretty cool themes you can download for it too.  Currently I'm running this one but I downloaded about 4 others to switch to depending on my mood.  They are very easy to install.

Online/PSN Store: Pretty much your basic online store.  It's got some good sorting options for finding things, but it's what you'd expect it to be.  I have downloaded 14 demos from it so far (I need stuff to do till I get paid lol), and I'd say it works well. Background downloading is definitely nice to have, although you can't background install.  Friends list seems very easy to update and manage.  I don't know how it is playing games online because I don't have any yet heh.

So far, I'm very happy with my purchase.  I'm sure I'll be even happier with it when I get some games, but for now I'm having fun playing around with demos.  Oh, and for anyone who hasn't seen Planet Earth in HD I highly recommend you find a way to do so, as it's absolutely stunning.

Oh and my PSN ID is naznatips for anyone who wants to add me.

Cool beans naz.

What games did you decide to pick up when the money comes? My favorite so far this gen is Burnout Paradise, and I heard it looks slightly better on PS3.

Planet Earth is great on HD. I feel sorry for anyone that had to watch it on a standard DVD. Does anyone know if they ever play Planet Earth at IMAX? I'd love to go see it.

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

quick go get the Naruto Demo...I play that thing every day.....so awesome :)

...

Ya, I need to get Planet Earth, and all the Discovery Atlas episodes on Blu-ray eventually.

The Siren demo is awesome! It returns the S-C-A-R-Y that RE has neglected!

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Coolness.

Like I said before: No one spends hard earned money on a game and is unfairly biased against it.

Well you were never a biased person anyway, but your "impressions" of the PS3 were straightforward and well done.

Congratz. Hope I can experience that soon also.

I recently purchased and watched Planet Earth on Blu-ray. It's quite an experience.

I'm compelled to mention that the rare dancing bird section (as it attempts to to find a mate) is hilarious.

And the great white shark, leaping out of the ocean in slo-motion to crush a seal in it's jaws...

Truly excellent stuff.

+1 on planet earth in HD. Good to hear you are enjoying your purchase.
