Frankly, if the supposed 'hardcore' userbase of the 360 was dying all the time in the beginning until they levelled up a few times (and here I didn't even know there were levels; shows how much a demo on a friend's 360 really lets you see of a game, i guess), it sounds like it was just poorly balanced to begin with...

Then again, I am a firm believer in the Wiimote + guns = automatically decreased difficulty (all else being equal), so maybe I shouldn't hope they rebalance it too far...
