Forums - Sales - The Official June NPD Thread (for the 5 weeks ending 7/5, data in ~6 hours)

Sony's official word

"The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we're exactly where we expected to be. This month's success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we're poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA '09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience."

This, with MSs fiscals today have made me extremely happy.

With huge price cut in EU they still ship just 1.3 million. I think Sony will ship close to 3 million and the gap will become lower then 5 million.

3 million sounds extremely optimistic to me, did Sony ever come close to such a shipment number for PS3 outside of the holidays?

thats impossible! even in the holidays they didnt get that high!

We're talking about 3 months worldwide shipment numbers here, so during the holidays they get above it.

at the last holiday how much did they ship worldwide?

They shipped somewhere between 4 and 5 million PS3s if I remember correctly.

The biggest news here is that the PS3 got the biggest third-party exclusive it will ever receive and STILL fell far short of Wii's total.. and it couldn't come at a worse time for Sony.

I dunno man, I have a hard time spinning this bad for Sony. They aren't gonna beat the Wii in NPD, we shoulda realized that, but the fact that a hardware boost did actually show up in NPD numbers is huge and unprescidented for the PS3. Nothing for the Wii to hit 400,000, but for the PS3 to do it, that's monumental, as unpopular as that console has been in the past.

Again, I attribute this to MGS4. A great 3rd party exclusive.

It should have served as a lesson to Sony, to let them know that keeping FFXIII exclusive would have served them well in the US just like it would in Japan.

Instead, we'll see a GTAIV type of effect, with a big game getting released on multiple platforms and bumping them both slightly. We won't see a MGS4 effect from the game though, because of that loss.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

thats pretty good actually, considering that the ps3 wasnt doing so well in north america then and i remember having no games to play apart from uncharted. where as the 360 had a very strong lineup of games for the holidays! this year should be interesting! both consoles should do well this year, 360 with gears 2 and ps3 with all sorts of good shit! i left the wii out because we all know that does good regardless of good games. even if there was no game on it at all it would still top the ps3 and 360.

Well, the big story from this NPD is "bad news for MS - all round".

Firstly, Wii overtakes 360 US install base - even with the 12 month head start.

Then PS3 almost doubles the monthly 360 sales, and takes the #1 title for the month - a PS3 exclusive.

And lastly, 360 sales look extremely weak in the US at the moment. Only two 360 titles in the top#10.

...

As a few people have said, that price cut can't come quickly enough - if MS can't turn around this US performance, and FAST - its going to be a complete disaster for them (good E3 or not).

They really need some compelling, exclusive 360 software to hit - and fast. "Too Human"??

Also interesting that the sales for THIS month may be around half for the PS3 than last month (4 weeks versus 5, and lower sales per week). But will still (probably) beat the 360...

The gloves are coming off in the 360 vrs PS3 battle...

they should have kept it exclusive! it will have the biggest effect in japan. even if it was exclusive it would still have the biggest effect from japan, japan love FF and as MGS4 showed, they are hungry for top class games and FFXIII is just that.

the price drop should help for a while. after the price cut the 360 should outsell the ps3 in america for a while but i still dont think it will outsell the ps3 worldwide because of the combined gap in japan and europe. the only time i think the 360 will outsell the ps3 worldwide is when gears 2 is released.

I think it was MGS4 + $100 gift card at Walmart that did it! - Remember Vgchartz doesn't track walmart.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/wal-mart-corporate-confirms-100-ps3-gift-card-yes-even-mgs/

Theres the scoop. So I think that explains both the discrepency and the huge sales the PS3 got.

$499 80GB PS3 with $60 MGS4 and $100 Gift card = $160 discount for some people. Or they could have gotten a 40gb PS3 no MGS4 for $399 with said $100 gift card and bought a PS3 for less than a Pro Xbox360 if you add it all up. *Xtra controllers/games etc*

So based on that I would predict that theres not yet any indication of a trend for a huge increase in PS3 sales rates.

Tease.

I know.

But you're talking two years, at least in the horizon.

By the time any possible FFXIII effect would have came for the PS3, it would have been too late.
