Forums - Sales - PS3 - 360; and the gap shortens....

only me thinking that ps3 will never pass 360??

Around the Network

Jordhan - It's interesting the games you mention (R&C, Siren, Disgaea), combined, haven't sold over 3 million copies on the Playstation for their best showings. So it's kind of hard to ask any self-respecting gamer to say that they're buying a PS3 for those kinds of exclusives.

At any rate, a few Sony fans should Wiki "Phyrric Victory", because anything the Playstation 3 does this generation is exactly that.

No self respecting fan of the Xbox 360, if they follow the numbers has ever said the Xbox 360 would beat the PS3. But my God, that gap has dwindled from tens of millions of units to a few million in only 2 short years. That's abysmal for the Playstation franchise.

As of this year, the Playstation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360 by an average of 228,000 units per month, on any given month. A decent bit of units.

However, using that same margin of victory, it will take the playstation over 2 years from today to beat the X360.

So lets add it together:

1) Playstation 3 outsells the Xbox 360 in (approx.) August 2010
2) Playstation 3 loses far more money on their gaming division versus Micrsoft (Sony will lose 1b this year. Microsoft will gain 500m or more)
3) Playstation 3 loses 95% of their exclusives from last generation
4) Playstation 3 gets trounced by the Wii in terms of LTD sales

So again..Phyrric victory. Whoop-de-friggin do! Sony, you beat MS, congrats! You may have lost billions of dollars, and every game that matters, limping into second place! You have just won the special olympics silver medal!

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Neither is going to set the world on fire until they are $250 or less -- especially with the U.S. economy struggling. Just as a side note, I get this from VGC tables: (this is DEC 1 to Jul 5 or 32 weeks)

Console PS3 X360
Total 7,582,868 6,030,075

Thats a net difference of 1,552,793 consoles over 32 weeks or 48,524 on average. This includes any effects from MGS IV and GT5:P. Obviously, that number may be a bit larger over the holidays, but it will depend a lot on pricing, how well the $299 deal sells, etc. This includes Holiday 2007 worldwide. With a current gap of 5,580,000, we are still looking at 114 weeks from today to match the 360. If we were to take only from the beginning of January to now, the differential looks like this:

Console PS3 X360
Total 5,182,466 3,815,486

This is a spread of 1,366,980 in 27 weeks or about 50,628 consoles per week. This pretty much tells the same story. 50K units per week, on average, for PS3 sales over 360 sales and again means 2 years from today.

Obviously the PS3 needs to "accelerate" the sales differential in the coming months -- especially the holidays -- to close the gap in 2K9. It will be interesting to see how the two new pricing announcements affect sales in the next month or two as well as whether or not the FFXIII announcement will let any air out of the PS3's sails...

I posted something similar some time ago and people jumped all over me and pointed out that you can't just future sales by looking at the past. Clearly the PS3 has picked up momentum, but GTAIV and MGSIV have not changed the landscape much. Blu-Ray is now the defacto standard, however, and the holidays may be quite solid for the PS3... We'll see...

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

I can only agree with you if you are referring to the indiscriminant gamer, casual or hardcore, who doesn't have any specifics which plays whatever comes their way. But most gamers do have preferences. So "anyone that trades a 360 for ps3 should feel very cheated" is a false blanket statement. If I can't play games like Ratchet & Clank, Siren, & Disgaea on the Wii or the 360, I'd feel cheated. So let's be a little less biased here (as a gamer). SONY still has their share of exclusives, non-exclusives that are still on/coming to the PS3 while there are still multi-platform games that are as good as the 360 version is not better.  And not everyone's "gaming schedule" is the same. I'm glad I get to play the better version of Oblivion on the PS3 with nothing against the 360 version. Depending on what you want, SOME people who "trades a 360 for ps3 should feel very cheated," but surely not all.  Especially when you consider the fact that SONY is the 4th largest console software developer/publisher in the world. SONY does have offering and future offerings that complement what 3rd parties are doing for the PS3. And the whole PC and PS3 argument is quite valid. Otherwise, Microsoft should have just stuck to PC gaming.

:)

I agree with you completely. However when discussing things like this on forums one must take the most general argument approach. I won't be able to convince anyone that Mortal Kombat 2 online on my ps3 is better and more fun than bioshock on 360. And I think it is... :)

So my argument about "ps3 owners feeling cheated" reffers to an average ps3 owner being more jelous for not being able to play Gears of War, Halo 3, Mass Effect and Ninja Gaiden 2 than a 360 owner wanting to play MGS4, Unchartd, Ratchet and Resistance. It reffers to superior community and online service... Better selection of classic titles for old school gamers. General things like that...

However I reckognize that there is niche gaming on both consoles that only that console does best and if that appeals to a gamer, he has made the right purchase whichever console he choses.

As far as PC vs xbox...despite all of the people that own PC's and won't buy xboxes because they can play similar games, Microsoft seems to be finding a market for the xbox product so I think its good they got in to the videogame market no?

Price drop on one console, more for same cost on another. Plenty of Exclusives and 3rd party games, rumors and fables, hype and more hype, tit for tat and this is the story of the 360 and PS3.

IMO it won't be this year, but next year that Sony catches up and takes over. I don't see Sony losing momentum at the moment. Looks like the swap over from 360 to PS3 has begun.

I have spoken to several people who bought the 360 as a time pass console until the ps3 was released. Some stuck by the 360 until PS3 had more games and then changed over, the others stood by and awaited a price drop whilst some others waited for blu ray to be the format winner before they purchased a PS3. It seems everyday, more of these former PS2 owners are given reason to change over. If Sony announce another price drop, it will be all over for the 360. They will come in 3rd place this generation. It's just a matter of time.

You act like it will be an incredible achievement if PS3 will overtake the 360. At the current pace that won't be in the first half of 2009.
If you see it perspective you'll see that last gen the PS2 outsold the 360 by 100 million units and all of a sudden you're saying that passing the 360 2.5 years in the PS3's life is a major accomplishment. That's fanboy talk.

Microsoft doesn't really care about that 3rd place (of course they wouldn't mind winning). Their Entertainment Division is profitable and they have acquired an excellent position for their next Xbox. In this gen they achieved incredible stuff: GTA, RE, DMC and now even FF are now all on their machine. The 360 is a success for Microsoft.

Sony is a totally different story. They lose loads of money, the lost almost all exclusives bare MGS and will be in a much weaker position for the PS4. Sure the PS3 will come in second, no doubt about that, but they've lost an aweful lot this gen.

O.........M...........G  Just like i predicted....before it was like OMFG PS3 will never start outselling the 360 PS3 SUxxoRZ...Then it was OMFG it started outselling it its like FUXXorZ u guys it will need to sell like 1m more counsoles per week to catch up PS3 Still SUxxoRZ....now its OMG LoLZ MS dosent mind being in 3rd place (thats a new one BTW) and when it id does overtake it its gonna mean nothing because they should have outsold it the first week the PS3 was out....

Get a clue dood

As I implied earlier, console sales placement is moot to me especially in a time in the industry where it's not as crucial as it used to be. And in regards to the titles I mentioned, why "3 million combined?" Is this suppose to mean that these are bad games and no one is to play them while they should be ignored? Of course NOT. There is no legit point in this random figure you made up. As a gamer, I don't care how well/poorly a game sell or what average ratings a game gets. If it's a game I want and feel that it's worth of my hard earned money, that's the game I'll buy and play. This is what gaming is about. But I can see why you voiced such a position. You statements are in regards to SONY when in fact it should be towards the OP. Go... figure...

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

And the gap will only widen further in the 360s favor for the next month or two. Price drop will start the ball rolling.

What is more, I have no doubt that this holiday season the 360 will outsell the PS3 by a large margin in the US again just like the last two.

The PS3 will probably never catch with the 360 in the US this generation.

Summer 09. No later than Fall 09. EARLY FALL 09!! MARK MY WORDS!!

@disolitude

Not to say I can read your intentions, but it seems you are more referring to the PS3 fanboy who denies the quality of games on other console (like any other fanboy). And in regards to "average ps3 owner being more jelous...than a 360 owner," VERY subjective. So it's hard for me to buy your claim of "general argument approach." Again in regards to "PC and PS3," it's not an issue of good or bad that Microsoft is in the console industry. It's an issue that if a consumer can avoid to buy a whole new console to play a game (like how some 360 users can now decide to play FFXIII on the 360 or a person can play a PC version of a game instead of buying a 360), more power to that consumer.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Ok then. If you want to argue small franchises, I think that Ace Combat, Halo, Katamari, and Banjo-Kazooie series are all big series, and that when they get sequels on the X360, fans will flock to the 360. Moreso than the Playstation 3 :)

If it's all about games, than the X360 is light years ahead. Very few big-name franchises on the PS3 that are exclusive, Many more on the X360. Name the top-selling exclusive Playstation franchise? GT. 1 Year away. Name the next? MGS4. Major reduction in LTD sales vs. previous itenerations. And so on. So I'm not understanding your point, Xbox 360 franchises that are exclusive matter as much as PS franchises. But when you look at unit volume of games, the X360 side is much larger when we talk exclusives, and that's my point. Rachet & Clank - how large of a hardware increase was there when it came out? How bout Disgaea 3 in Japan? Answer: very little if none. And I doubt Siren will be either.
