Eh... sure you risk leaking... but you get games to market sooner. Anyone thing EA knew about this?
What with Tiger Woods 09 supposed to have direct 1 to 1 controls anyway?

Its beneficial. The reality is neither competitor came through with a wii mote clone this year and Nintendo keeping secrets is the best way to prevent theft. I am sure it won't take too long to change in game physics on releases coming almost a year from now. They might even rush Wii Sports 2 ensuring all developers who are ready will have the tech available, or maybe they will include the attachment in other games prior to this.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
I agree with Mike - The register is a digital rag. Might as well ask Al Gore. He invented the internet, ya know. Get us a more credible source on this. Nintendo probably has kept others in the know, just like with the balance board - games from other devs came out at the same time as its launch with games that used that tech.
It's true that most if not all developers had no foreknowledge of this thing. However it isn't coming out until spring next year, which still leaves plenty of time to incorporate it. Personally I think it was just a premature announcement aimed to shield themselves from the potential of MS/Sony knockoffs, which haven't even materialized.

I BLAME IGN, Where was the Westernised Wii Fit game talked up prior to E3. I don't think anyone knew at all. I thought Tiger in the EA conference was using it but can't be sure now. Probably not, but they will be gettin that son of a bitch asap

Yea of course it was. Nintendo pulled a SIXAXIS on itself, for no reason what so ever.

All of this is just trying to pick the negative - fact is they moaned about the unresponsiveness of the controls then nintendo fix it and they moan about a split userbase when nobody knows how it's gonna be rolled out yet.
Who can say there wont be a new sku with Wii Sports 2 and these motion plus attachments are standard which is why they said spring 09 - get xmas out of the way and release a new sku. And about the devs heads up whats the difference in them getting told a year ago and nintendo saying "this is it and these are the games that'll support it" to nintendo saying to the world "right this is coming out next year - get ready"?

Tigers out next month and the motion plus isn't released until next spring
At least the article explains what motionplus is correctly:
"This can be solved with the addition of a second accelerometer, ideally at the other end of the remote, and that is what the MotionPlus appears to be. With less sensitivity, but no 3G limit, it becomes possible to track the location of the remote with much greater accuracy, as reported by those who've had a chance to play with the sensor."
The existing Wii-mote has the sensitivity, its the removal of an upper G limit for the "MotionPlus" that helps them keep full track of location. Also you can use the second set of data to normalize the overall motion data and remove noise motions.
