Forums - Sony - Are there any differences between the 40GB and the 80GB besides BC?

Oh yeah, that chart reminded me of one more difference. 40Gb doesn't play SACD's. It says new 80Gb isn't in production yet, but if it releases in September then it probably is already in production. They should have put "unknown" instead.

Thanks to Words of Wisdom and BKK2 for the detailed information.

@BKK2 - Yes, in Brazil, the vast majority of consoles are imported from the USA.

Also, there is a big chance that I will travel to USA in January, so that will give me an opportunity to buy a PS3 at a much cheaper price.

The prices in my country are simply absurd (really heavy taxes + companies-stores ripping us off).

Since I don´t care about BC, having the same PS3 with twice the HDD is a big plus to me.

P.S. - I don´t want to buy a new HDD and insert in my PS3. I know nothing about this things and I´m afraid of screwing up something that costs a lot of money and that I´m going to buy in another country.

@BKK2 - is that a big thing? Super Audio Cd, I mean.

All the PS2 classic games will eventually be on the PSN. Just allow some time. So a PS3 no longer BC is no big drama.

I don't know anyone with Super Audio Cds...is it just more space? Is that a DVD audio disc?

SACD is a failed format, that gives slightly improved quality to audio on special CD's

Hi, i'm solojohlo and i'm pretty fucking awesome

Yeah, I've been to Brazil a couple of times and know the console prices are crazy there. Similar situation across most of Latin America.

You should certainly buy the new 80Gb whilst you're in the US. If you need to ask about SACD then it's not important to you, it's a really niche format, so I wouldn't worry about that. You would have a hard time finding any SACDs in Brazil anyway.

As for changing the HDD, you won't break any of the electronics, but the screws are quite soft, so you need to use the correct sized screwdriver otherwise you can round off the screws which is a bit of hassle, but nothing that will require you to send it back to Sony. It's a very simple process.

So having no SACD isn´t a big thing? Great! Thanks :D

@BKK2 - Which kind of screwdrivers? What kind of HDD´s? Not to mention, if I buy a new one, how do I transfer files (saves, demos, etc.) from one to the other?

Thanks for the help. I´m completely clueless about these things.

It's not a failed format, SACDs are still produced. It's just that it's a niche format which only really appeals to audiophiles. Kind of like Laserdisc was pretty niche, but still had content produced for it for decades.

Basically it's HD audio.
