Yeah, I've been to Brazil a couple of times and know the console prices are crazy there. Similar situation across most of Latin America.
You should certainly buy the new 80Gb whilst you're in the US. If you need to ask about SACD then it's not important to you, it's a really niche format, so I wouldn't worry about that. You would have a hard time finding any SACDs in Brazil anyway.
As for changing the HDD, you won't break any of the electronics, but the screws are quite soft, so you need to use the correct sized screwdriver otherwise you can round off the screws which is a bit of hassle, but nothing that will require you to send it back to Sony. It's a very simple process.
