They're in competition, too say anything less would be mock humility. Projecting confidence to your team and your consumers is desirable. Whether they can back it up is another story, but intent and goal setting is an important step
the only reason MS is where it is is because the 360 came out a year ahead of the PS3, if they were released at the same time the PS3 would be trouncing it right now, but eventually the Sony machine will dominate the sales and MS will end up flat on it's bootie.
Notice they didn't say anything about making a comeback against the Wii.
They have all conceded to Wii's dominance!!!!
jk, of course they said that. Same reason both MS and Sony continuously say Wii is just a toy and not directly competing with them. It's just what companies have to do for PR.
I believe the xbox division of this gen will at least be profitable... so that's a win, even if they end up being 3rd.

I don't think it's the first time MS do this. It's more than obvious they would do this, what did you expected them to say? "Hey! we are loosing this war and we don't have any chance to win it, so buy another console!". Not a good idea if you as me :P
Whether they will be second or third is irrelevant. They are in a much much better position now than they were with the original box. Sony on the other hand...

from the looks of thing, it now looks very much possible, with all the exclusives that ms is buying plus all the formerly ps3 exclusives going the the xbox360, plus it being cheaper...
