Forums - Sony - Why will final fantasy XIII multiplatform make people sell their PS3's?

True, but these are the same people who could have just bought a PS3 for less than $300 anyway by the time the game is released.

Unless there was some other compelling reason why they wanted a PS3, why would they be paying a premium for one currently over a year before the game is even set to be released?

One really shouldn't blame circumstances like this based upon their own failure for rational thought.

It's a given all consoles will be cheaper the longer you hold off on a purchase. You buy one when your personal main reason for owning one is available, not because it's going to be in the distant future.

I don't buy the "could have saved $100" argument by being able to buy this title for the 360.

It's bunk and everyone knows it.

By this line of reasoning, anyone who bought a 60GB PS3 during the first 7 or so months it was priced at $599 could have saved themselves $200 by not doing anything until the $399 SKU was released. Why would it make a difference? FFXIII wasn't available then and it still isn't available now even with the $399 SKU.

If someone were hypothetically buying a console for one specific game, a reasonably intelligent, sensible individual would likely wait for that one specific game to go retail first. Most likely, buying the game along with the console.

Why would anyone claim to buy a piece of hardware months, if not years before said title were even published?

It's common knowledge that the price of consoles drops in increments throughout their life cycles.

By the time FFXIII is published, there's a high probability one could buy a new PS3 for about $100 less than today at $299.

But people are going to get hurt, upset, offended, whatever anyway because people are emotional and often irrational beings.

From SE's point of view, I don't blame them. There is a large user base for JRPGs on the 360 in English speaking territories. FFXIII has been in production for years and stands to run up a very large development budget by the time the project wraps up.

From Sony's point of view, they've already gone on record as saying they aren't paying for exclusivity this generation. Maybe not 100% true since technically, bundling MGS4 with the 80GB SKU is in effect "paying" for that exclusivity by guaranteeing pack in sales, presumably minus the licensing fee (unconfirmed).

because i also wanted to play dmc4, gta4, mgs4 and so on and so forth. just because ffxiii isnt being released yet does not mean that i would deny myself of playing the other good game that are coming out.

i bought the ps3 assuming that the rpgs would come to this console as well as ffxiii. much like how there was an abundance of rpgs on the original playstation and on the ps2.

but now, with the x360 having a better rpg line up, and then throwing in ffxiii into it, plus the fact that its cheaper looks like a better deal now.

if i hadnt bought a ps3, i would be getting a x360 instead.

Then buy a 360 AFTER FFXIII is released if you like JRPGs that much.

As of right now, it's clearly the better platform for that genre.

By the time FFXIII is released, you'll probably be able to buy a 360 for anywhere between $199 to $249 with a 60GB HDD. $299 at the most.

unless you dont know, some of us can only afford 1 console per generation.

Even when they're under $200 late in the console cycle. I find that hard to believe.

All I have to say to that is the best policy in any console generation has ALWAYS been to wait a couple years to see how things started to pan out before committing to one platform if the option of going with more than one is not a financial option.

You still get the lower hardware prices on the latest consoles, better bundle options and you also get the added benefit of a two year library, plus discounted games.

But I also realize not many gamers want to hear that since the typical thing to do is buy early so as to reap the perceived benefit of gaming on the bleeding edge.

If you don't have patience, then be prepared to pay in more ways than one.

I'm sad about it going multiplat. but I wouldn't sell my PS3. That'd be STUPID.... I'm bitter about it but still I bought a PS3 for that reason and that I shall do. When it comes out it's the PS3 version for me.

whats hard to believe? i'm married, and have a 1 yr old baby boy. he drinks milk like there's no tomorrow, cant sleep without airconditioning. plus i also have to pay for rent, electricity, water, etc etc etc. plus what ever extra cash i have left over goes to his schooling funds.

so when i say i can only afford 1 game console per generation, i mean it. the only way for me to get another console is to buy a used wii. (wiis are cheaper than x360s you know)

why wait when you can buy know? why deprive yourself of the pleaseure of gaming for years just to get it cheap? people who wait can drool while watching me play games now.

why do you want them to :

sell the best BR player

and their free online access

Time to Work !

Some, yes.

PS3 and 360 owners did a very strange thing this generation: they didn't wait for their favorite games to come out before buying the consoles. They treated their consoles as some sort of investment, biding themselves with 'lesser' games in the hope that their most anticipated game would make the console 'worth it.' FFXIII, MGS4, GTAIV, and Halo 3 were the most commonly cited examples of "investment games" for these consoles, and this is why three of these games failed to produce visible lasting boosts to the hardware sales post-launch: those boosts had been in effect since the very beginning. The fourth -FFXIII- has yet to be released.

This was a stupid thing to do, as the Wii owners -who generally acted more sensibly by waiting for their favorite games to be released before buying the console- could have told them. Things change pre-release sometimes, and this is a prime example of why. The PS3 investors lost: their console can play only two of The Big Four while its "main competitors" can play three.

All of this only seems rational if you're trying to quantify exactly much fun you're having, rather than just having fun. But that's how a console investor thinks.  Having fun isn't enough; you need to have MOAR fun, and to determine what this means you need marketers to tell you. This is the marketing model on which both the PS3 and 360 have based their entire business models for this generation, and now the PS3 is going to get burned.

It's over. Third place has been decided.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
