ll then let's start with the fact that Nintendo has sold more gaming systems than Sony over the last ten years [1], and after that I'd like to ask you for your source for VCR and DAT player market share.

[1] Nintendo: GB 53m + GBA 81m + GC 22m + DS 75m + Wii 28m = 259m gaming systems. Sony: PS1 70m + PS2 120m + PSP 36m + PS3 14m = 240m gaming systems, 19m less than Nintendo. All according to VGchartz. For GB and PS1 I only took the shipments after March'98.
I think it's pretty clear that he meant home consoles as handhelds wouldn't apply to "controlling the living room," but even then....

The PS1 sold 106 million units, not 70 million, so even by that standard, Sony has still sold more consoles in the last ten years. 16 million more, to be exact.

I like how you responded without actually reading what he posted.  Twice.

@ reverie: very handy that you picked 5 systems for nintendo (gb, gba, gc, ds and wii) and only four for sony. Technically, that would make it Sony's win. Or was that a "glitch"?
I was replying to the statement "Sony has sold more gaming systems then anyone else over the last 10 years", so I lined up all the gaming systems Sony and Nintendo have been selling since early 1998. Sure, Sony did not have a handheld line before 2004. That's one of the reasons why they don't dominate the living room.

Also, I'd like to know where you got that 106m number, because I see 102.49m.  And did you really think that the Game Boy had only sold 53m?

You also apparently missed this one:

By the way, I forgot to count some 17m N64. So the gap is 36m.

So.

Of course control is revenue...

The kid with the most toys wins...

Hmm, yes, clearly inarguable.  That is actually the Webster's definition for control.  Sony clearly controls American homes.  They are so good they sell me a PS3 at a huge loss.  Yep, I'm the big sucker there, not them for producing a product that didn't take into account customer needs/desires.

The fact that people are buying stock in Nintendo has nothing to do with control. It's an investment decision based on instant payoff as they have probably education in sales trends and know it will increase at least for another year, so buying now will increase their own bank account.. But nice article. And a good read for anyone interested.

Instant payoff, or long term market analysis.  I think it's quite telling that people think a that Nintendo's cash on hand, manufacturing agreements/facilities, inventory or DS/Wii (or lack thereof), and internal IPs are worth more than all of Sony's assets straight up.  I'm not arguing Nintendo has control of the living room because they don't either.  They have a hit with the Wii.  But if people didn't have the Wii, they would either buy a PS3, Xbox360, PS2, or the market wouldn't expand.  I think it's the same thing with Sony.  Their is nothing that they have that if they stopped producing it I would miss.  There are too many companies that are good at manufacturing HDTVs, DVD players, surround sound systems, etc for those markets to collapse due to Sony leaving.

Microsoft has lost more than 7 billion dollars until now with the xbox adventure and is still loosing money. MS is the looser of the century.

Another company with control, GM right? I couldn't find a more recent article. While Toyota has taken the worldwide market share crown, I believe that GM still has the US automaker marketshare crown. They also have junk bond status. I think what people forget is companies come up with all kinds of short term goals such as being the electronics manufacturer that is the centerpiece of the living room. But when it comes down to it, the #1 goal of any company is to make a huge profit. And we all know who is winning at that.

Yes, MS ist still loosing money with the Xbox. That is a fact, to be seen in their last financial report, if you read this accurately.

Microsoft made the xbox because they thought they could dominate every section of the computer industry.

They were wrong.

Actually they have been showing quarterly profits as of late.  It is nowhere near enough to have broken even throughout their XBox time though.  They are not still losing money though.
