Not really surprising, Sony already lost a lot of money on PS3 and if they dont concentrate on profitability now then they might see profit a long time from now. I think Sony is adopting Gamecube stance: little chance of becoming the market leader but still capable of making large amounts of money.
P.S.
Because I know that somebody will try to kill me for comparing PS3 to gamecube, I am not insinuating that PS3 is doing as badly as gamecube, all I am saying is that they are adopting a similar strategy of profit maximization.

They said that there was "No plan" to reduce prices. However, situations can change that and force or at least encourage Sony to drop prices. It could be that manufacturing costs have reduced quite a bit. It could be that the PS3 took a hit in sales numbers when the 360 drops a price.
The way they worded that, wouldn't make it illegal to call for a price drop, just that at this point, the focus is not on dropping the price and work on profitability. If Sony was feeling pressure to drop the price, or could afford to do so, they would in a heart beat I think. Even with talking to investors, the media would pick up on it, so they have to tread that path ever so carefully when discussing a price drop. Nobody in the company would mention plans of any sort of price drop where the information gets out to the public. Chances are, there are plans for a price drop. Just the one thing they may not be certain of, is when they will do so.
