Forums - Sony - Sony: No Plans for PS3 Price Drop

I highly doubt they will announce a price cut at E3, but they wouldn't say so even if they were about to announce it. I think a price cut just before the holiday season begins would make more sense for the company. For one it allows some more months to go by so that the cost of making the PS3 is lowered and second a drop before the holidays when most consoles are sold is just smart business sense especially if the costs are reduced some more.

Not sure whether this is true. A year ago they denied a price cut, and it happened a week later, but i'm sure they don't want to lose anymore money....

So if we go by their track record last year, this pretty much guarantees a price cut next week. Awesome!

Sony projected to lose over $1.5 bln more this year on PS3...so I don't doubt no price cut...they are trying to figure out how to get to breakeven, not giving price cuts.

I really guess that sony is trying to get around without a pricedrop in the us. With the weak dollar the ps3 is allready a lot cheaper in the us than in the eu as an example, so if they are still selling hardware at losses in parts of the world then the us is definitely a part of the world where they sell with losses.  No idea if they still sell at losses, that depends on how much the production costs went down in the last months, in jan i heared that each ps3 costs about 400$ to make so then selling at 400$ was still a loss.

But i am definitely sure that Sony will watch sales, and if they see that the xbox pricecut is directly affecting their own sales they will act with some measures. But  i don't think they will act if ps3 continues to sell at same rates and xbox gets a small boost, but they might also have plans for the case that the boost gets too big.

There is no way SONY will drop the price at E3. TGS is the earliest i can see a price drop happening and even then i wouldn't expect anything huge.

Previously when SONY denied price cuts they would say something like "we have no plans for a price cut at the moment". Now their saying "PS3 is selling to our expectation and were aiming for profitability -- their will be no price cuts for the foreseeable future"

Except SONY to attempt to ignore the 360 price cut and use it aganist M$ when June NPD has them above 360.

The issue is Sony has said to its shareholders now the equivalent of "we can't cut the price because we wont be profitable."

or... they don't want to LEAK it and see no sales for the last 1 months because people rather wait and save 50/100 bucks?

At least one company CAN keep a secret. ;)

This definitely shouldn't be taken as proof, since we all remember last year.

That said, when they swore they wouldn't be dropping the price last year, many were vehemently pissed that they actually listened to that and ended up spending $100-$200 more than they needed to. Also, I think this time they really mean it when they say they're going to focus on profitability.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Sony denied a price cut all last September and October and then put one in place in November.

Whatever a console vendor says about a price cut should be ignored as it is a PR ploy to ensure that the current sales don't slump.

I would think Sony will play this by ear based on sales. If they were to fall into a distant third they would have no choice but to cut price. But, that is unlikely as they have momentum in Europe, are far ahead of 360 in Japan, and are keeping up with 360 in North America.
