Forums - Gaming - Shenmue - Why do you torture us yu suzuki? why?

've been playing video games since I was 7 years old, I am 26 now and I have owned and played through pretty much every console there is. Regardless of how many great games have been released, only a few stand out. One of the games that I pray I see the end to is Shemnue.

I remember the day the game was released, I had my copy reserved. I ran home read through the manual and switched my DC on. A few minutes later, I didn't realise but i was sucked into a virtual world and i was not able to put the controller down. I was so drawn into the story, its characters and the gameplay it offered, I didn't sleep or go college until I completed the game. I repeated the same for Shemnue 2 and now I am seriously angered at the fact that there no news of a third or final installment.

There is no game like Shenmue and it truly is one of a kind. Am I the only person who feels that way or is there more to Shemnue then just being another great game?

Because Shenmue cost so much money to make and it didn't break even

I've always wanted to play Shenmue...but I own two copies now and neither of them work! Luckily I got to watch 20 minutes of the first cut scene before it froze though...just to tease me.

Anyone remember the Shenmue I and II being ported to the Wii rumor?

Currently playing: Okami (Wii), The World Ends With You (DS), and Shenmue (Dreamcast)

Yes but like I said, they didn't sell to expectations and Sega lost a ton of money on them.

Yeah it seems they spent Us$ 70 million on both episode.

The first one was one of the best selling Dreamcast game with 1.2 million copies but the break even point was at 2 million units.

Shenmue is pretty damn amazing and a shining example of a game that did not get the sales it deserved. Still remember driving my fork lift for cash to play darts and Space Harrier in the ingame arcade. Haven't picked up the second installment, however, I did purchase a new DC in order to have the opportunity to do so in future.

Can't see a third Shenmue at all though. It's just not financially viable based on the sales of the previous two. Luckily I do have Yakuza for PS2 sitting around waiting to be played, and i've heard that it's fairly similar.

Playing: InFamous, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga, Modern Warfare 2

I wonder....other than the Dreamcast's relatively low userbase, why did Shenmue sell so poorly?

lol, every Dreamcast owner should have bought a copy in order to break even!

@Flash: You can get it for Xbox as well...

There are rumours that Sega will make the third game for Wii. I'd like to see that, since it's similar to Indigo Prophecy.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

for those who did not play the second instalment, u think the 1st one ended in a cliff hanger...wait till you see the end to the 2nd part. it left me wanting to play more and more and more and i was sooooo pee'd off when the dreamcast went down cuz i knew it would ruin the shenmue saga.

Well Shenmue sold well on the dreamcast considering its low user base but on the 360, the 360 fans didnt just take up to it well.

Scotland even had a petition signed for sega to make a part 3 :S they have to make a part 3 it would be a crime for them not to finish it. It would be like lord of the rings without the return of the king, it would be like star wars without the return of the jedi, it would be like terminator without terminator 3.... wait hold up, there not being a terminator 3 would actually be a good thing lol okay count all of them apart from terminator pls :p
