Forums - Sony Discussion - Why did MGS 4 fail to move consoles?

In Japan it caused the largest proportional increase in hardware sales of any game, in any territory this generation. By a long way.

I don't think any game this generation has been a huge system mover (even a juggernaut like Halo 3). People were way too optimistic about the effect MGS4 would have on PS3 sales.

Uhm WiiSports? WiiFit?

The Source: Yeah you're probably right. The problem for Sony here is that the next 5+ million seller might come (but GTA isn't even there yet, so it will take a long time), but it won't get much of the smaller sellers which are pretty important too. If companies like Hudson stop developing for your console you essentially lose a part of your potential market. At the current pricepoint that not such a big deal, but at $100,- lower a broad library (including what the hardcore gamers call crap) is essential to push your console into the big sales numbers (like PS2 and Wii had loads of these "average" games, they sell).

WiiSports is packaged in NA and Others.  And the Wii basically sells out every week, so sales aren't dependent so much on what game has been released, but on how much Nintendo can supply.  Saying that WiiFit gave the Wii a boost in console sales is like saying GTA4 gave the Wii a boost in sales (didn't sales of the Wii double that week?).

WiSports is packaged?  That has absolutely nothing to do with it. You said that no game this generation has been a system seller. WiiSports IS the system seller. Probably the best system seller ever. That game is the main reason the Wii sells out every week, it doesn't sell out because it's Wii.

How can it be said that it was not a system seller when it is said that most people that are MGS fans already had a PS3...
This means that if MGS4 was on the 360 or the Wii then these people would buy those consoles instead and the PS3 would have lower sales coming into the release week...
There is also the fact of the 100%+ boost during the relaese.

So the argument that it is not a system seller fails

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

Are you f***ing serious? It has moved over 90,000 consoles in Japan alone. It caused a 700% increase in sales first week in Japan. It more than doubled PS3 sales in NA first week. MGS4 is a system seller.

This thread = Fail.

Because is a good but not outstanding niche game.

the game has bin advertised since the ps3 launch, alot of people have already brought a ps3 because of that game over the pas few years.

Metal Gear Solid was never a system selling franchise to begin with and anyone who wanted it probably already bought a PS3 before it was released anyway.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

IMO system sellers for the PS3: FF, GTA (no anymore), GT.

i don't know, complicated story + complicated controls is not going to impress some of the average consumers that prefer simple shooters (unlike me ) . Regardless, it moved hardware from its usual weekly numbers beforehand. It's a flagship game, for fans and enthusiast. It's Metal Gear Solid, what do you expect, a Wii Sports like game that caters to a broader audience?

While you're trying to make it seem like Metal Gear Solid success was actually a failure, let me point out what Metal Gear Solid did, another game will move Hardware better.

Forget about Hardware, it sold 1.3 million World Wide in its first week, thats impressive.

 MGS4's controls are not that complex.  Plus you can play the game like a regular shooter if you choose to.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*
