"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

I posted this in another thread before:

Combine this:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=27380

First 18 months software units (US):

Wii - 50 million (not including Wii Sports)
X360 - 28 million
PS3 - 20 million
PS2 - 42 million

First 18 months hardware units (US):

Wii - 9.5 million
X360 - 5.2 million
PS3 - 4.2 million
PS2 - 8.5 million

With this:

"compares the xbox 360 to the PLAYSTATION 2 in terms of possible market share?"
am i fcking seeing right ???????

wtf is next microsoft ??????
a new halo game every year to try and beat wii and ps3 ??

If you don't count bundles, you'd remove a lot of Wii Sports (but it would still have ~10 million sold, eh?) and a lot of Forza, Marvell, etc. I don't see why you wouldn't include Wii Play. The game may be inexpensive, but it still costs something.

Pretty soon the myth is going to change to "The Wii only sells software not named Halo."

This.

I'm not trying to be anti-Wii here, but the fact is, there is no reliable data for Europe going back very far. VGC reports here that the Xbox 360 sold 2.3 million units of Software as of September 1st, 2007 - all the while the Wii had 6.6 million units of software life to date.

The issue with this is that the Weekly Worldwide Sellers page (the one I am assuming that everyone is citing to show Wii>X360 for SW) takes very little into consideration before September 2007. Life to Date in Others/PAL show the Wii wih 40.9m units, and the X360 with 21.2.m units. Again, problem is that 90% of X360 software sales show up during September 2007 and after.

If you use the Million Seller Database, which has some (if not all) estimated European/Other data for games >1m, we see glaringly different numbers for Others/PAL:

Wii: 36.0m

X360: 27.8m

So for Others/PAL data, this X360 number eclipses what is tracked by the Worldwide figure by roughly 6.5m units alone...Much closer to call, and it doesn't include games below 1m for either system, which would favor the Wii since it's data has been more available vs. older X360 games. By how much, know knows (could be small), but I'm betting its enough to call into question who's in the lead. Give it a few more months, though. I am sure by this Christmas, we'll see official press releases from VGC, and Nintendo about their software sales.

And for the record, this assumes that we're counting the 20 million copies of Wii Sports bundles as sold, and the 3 mllion copies of Forza/Marvel as sold as well, which further muddies the figures.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Bravo!

The margin of defeat is pretty good too, but the software numbers (no offense, ioi) have been somewhat sketchy these past couple of months (compared to NPD), and the data from 05 and 06 is still pretty sketchy too. Lots of games that came out around that time, and a few years before are severely lacking data, so I'll take this with an unusually big grain of salt.

But it's a good job for Nintendo anyway. Whether or not it happened already or not, it was/is bound to happen anyway, as the Wii is selling like crazy, and software alike is selling extremely well... Good job Nintendo!

You get a free game with every Nintendo Wii sold. That would help things a lot.

Umm, except a large portion of 360's and PS3's sold also came with a game.  So this argument fails miserably.
