Forums - Sony - 400 GB blu-ray disks.........maybe for games?

With a 100GB disc, I could see FF13 being huge, very long game, huge worlds, Awesome audio to macth those amazing visualls we've seen already.

Do you have any idea how they could possibly use 100GB for either one of those games?  Even if FF13 had 4 hours of 1080p uncompressed video, they still wouldn't need 100GB.

No offense to anyone here but has everybody lost their minds here? Or is everyone a Sony fanboy? The Blu-Ray drive on the PS3 is only 2x. That is the reason installs are needed because the drive can't buffer the data fast enough. If Blu-Ray goes to 400 GB the install would need to be huge in order to buffer the data. The worst part is since the drives are internally set, speeds can't be changed via firmware.

@ Rainbird

Which means the installs would be way more then 5 GB.

I apologize to anyone offended by my post. Moderators please don't ban me. I'm not trying to start a war just stating the truth with facts about why 400 GB Blu-Ray doesn't make sense.

Whoa, no offense taken! ;)

But you do realize that Sony imposed a 5 GB limit for developers to use? :P

It was pretty much agreed upon from the start that the PS3 will most likely never see a 400 GB disk.

MGS4 says hello. And tell me which Final Fantasy wasn't longer than MGS4??? And MGS4's native res was 720p I think.
FF13, really long, uncompressed audio, 6 hours of uncompressed video, the large variety of enemies. Am not saying they will need a 100GB disc, am saying it mite be usefull if they want to go crazy with the game and stuff it with major content.

Am not saying I know what's in the game by the way. Am just stating possibilities. [don't want people thinking the wrong way.]

Great, we have a large storage capacity per disc. What about access times and read/write speeds?

If FFXIII has 4 hours of umcopressed video (180/24) they wouldn't need 100GB. They would need about 2TB!

Finally I won't need to have 5 bluray disks for my Blade-Runner collection. They will be able to fit all of the variations of one movie on one disk!!!

You mean a game that boasted 10 hours of cutscenes.  Also a game that barely exceded a single layer BD disc(also including several GB of uncompressed audio)?  I'm sorry to say, but there is no reason any video game needs to be that large.

I still stand by my statement made earlier in the thread, optical storage capacity is rapidly exceeding mainstream consumer needs.

I would have preferred that programmers developed more and better compression techniques... but oh well.
