Forums - Sony - ThrowBack Article "Why the Ps2 will fail"

Sony did many things wrong with the PS2, there's no way it will be #1... it'll probably be #2 or even #3. The reason the PSX is so cool and successful is that it appeals to EVERYONE, not just a select crowd of people. PlayStation2 will be stuck in the middle between Dreamcast and Dolphin... the only thing that it won't have between DC and Dolphin is the price... PS2 will be the most expensive of the three.

PlayStation2 will cost a lot. $375 is way too much for most people to spend on a console. Now I know some 30 year old "kid" who buys all the latest electronics and games is gonna come on here and say that PS2 price is no problem for him, and that it'll go perfect with his high end home theater system and provide broadband products and services into his home.

Well that's just great... he and the other few thousand like him in the world will buy PS2 and love it, and the rest of the people on the earth will buy either Dreamcast or Dolphin, depending on how long they feel like waiting before joining the next generation.

What about the real kids... the ones without 5 or even 6 figure paychecks? What are they going to buy? Do you think they'll pay Sony's outrageous price just to get a few features that they don't even need nor care about? Hell no! They'll go to the store looking for PS2 and then get a Dreamcast because it'll be less than half the price (sega has said they will lower DC to $150 when PS2 launches). Then later on when people come to buy PS2, the Dolphin will be out... these customers will see a more powerful machine for at most the same cost as the PS2, providing Sony lowers it substantially. If not, Dolphin will actually be cheaper. Don't forget that Dolphin will have a worldwide launch in December 2000... PS2 only has a 3 month head start in the US and the rest of the world. PS2's only real lead is in Japan, considering that 3 months makes no difference, since Dolphin will be ready that Christmas anyway, when most systems are sold.

To reiterate, here's what the average gamer will do:

1. From now until holidays 2000, they'll see PS2 and get a heart attack from the high price, then they'll check out the Dreamcast which will be almost as good but at a $150 price. They'll get the Dreamcast.

2. From 2001 on, anyone who is looking to buy PS2 will probably also see Dolphin in the same store, and go with it since it's the most powerful machine. And it'll have great games like Mario and Zelda on it too, sure to be big system sellers.

PlayStation2 is overpriced, it only has a 3 month headstart on Dolphin everywehre but Japan, and it has a bunch of useless features that won't be used by mainstream consumers until the PS2's game abilities are obsolete.

Someone else posted a link to this article. We get the point, doom and gloom was spelled out for the PS2 because it was expensive and now people are saying the same thing about the PS3.

This was a prediction before the PS2 came out. After it arrived and started selling very well, the tune changed. They had 20 million consoles on the market before Gamecube and Xbox even launched. They were the first to market, thus giving them a huge advantage with developers. All that whining of being difficult to program for melted away because their marketshare overshadowed the other two.

Times have changed though. Again. Like they always do.

you know what the dolphin did become the gamecube... deg nintendo is willing to change the name of their console on a dime... example... Revolution to Wii... Dolphin to gamecube.. someone should make a thread on consoles names that should have beenn... would you have liked the wii over revolution...

Ps.. sorry to get off topic.. yea that guy feels dumb now i bet..

Much like the Wii, after its launch it became obvious that the PS2 would be successful and all the doomsayers were out of touch with reality ...

Yeah, months of empty shelves for a sold out product has a way of shutting people up. Or maybe not...

The price of the PS2 was a bunk complaint from the beginning. It launched at the same price as the PS1, so it wasn't too expensive. And most of us knew about the DVD player, so offering at the same price was like the player for free.

The PS3 obviously isn't the case.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

same crap said now, things are a bit different but still favor sony. 360 is not on PS3s level in any way, wii is underpowerd and will have a short life.

Sony does it right cuts the price and markets their games well they will kill the comp.

I love how random fanboys (and yes, you're a fanboy--anyone who doubts can read his sig) find predictions like these to prove that the PS3 is going to be the ultimate console. For some odd reason they think just because someone made a wrong prediction about the PS2 that has some similarities with the PS3 that this will automatically prove that the PS3 is going to come out of its slump.

I'm not saying the PS3 is going to do bad or good and your, what, 9 nine year old prediction doesn't prove anything other than the person who made that prediction was wrong about the PS2, not PS3.

Considering Gamecube eventually didn't get to the market until the end of 2001 (and even 2002 in Europe) the assumptions underlying the article are incorrect in the first place. The true story was that PS2 got up to a big lead before the competition even arrived and it never looked back afterwards. PS3 is in a completely different situation compared to the PS2 in this article.

- PS2 went on the have a big lead to start with, PS3 does not have this luxery.
- The article was written before PS2 was actually launched, and it sold well. The PS3 is now around 8 months into its lifecycle and sales are far from impressive.

If you want to believe that PS3 is in the same position as PS2 at the moment then go ahead. Just realise that some facts are not supporting your theory and some article written in 2000 will not change that.
