PS3 keeps falling

and the 360, and the ds, and the ps2........nice post.

Sensitive much?  Upset that the PS3 is failing?

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

nope. and not really. Take care.

Diomedes - why don't you go show in the current NPD numbers where PSP is selling 1M software a month then? And Namco announced 1M sold to retailers, so like 700-800k or so sell-through probably.

Well I should be subscripted to NPD to do that right now .Still ,I think its clear I have a point .In some months last year NPD gave the number of games sold for the month for the PSP .I read it in Kotaku and PSPupdates.com .It was over the 1 million mark for each month ,with the lower being 653K games for september or october. Its highly doubtful the PSP software has taken a dive of nearly 50% with a larger userbase and the machine selling better .As I told before I find hingly suspicious that games as Afterburner,Gunpey ,and Virtua Tennis 3 havent even entered the Top 400(when we had 14 pages of data)
a single time.As for the Namco announcement about Tekken DR ,I dont see anywhere the "sold to retailers " part so we are playing again to the old shipped/sold game.In any case I am speculating and cant prove it but I think there is some basis in what I say .

Yes the PSP has legs and so does the DS.

When was the last time the SECOND most succesful console was as successful as the PSP. Never in handhelds and when did it happen in home consoles?

The Game Gear got at least 20% of the handheld market back in the early-mid 90's.  It may have had more since I can't find per year sales just that over its 6 year life it sold about 20% as much as the Gameboy.  Given that the GG probably sold mostly during the first 3 years while the GB sold relatively evenly it most likely had a bigger marketshare ealier.

The PSP will probably not do much better than 25% share wise.  It sold almost as much as the DS its first year but not now it's being beat 3 or 4 to 1 in sales.  That ratio has grown right up the PSP price drop increase.  The price drop dropped the ratio to 2-3 to 1 this month but then the Gamecube's price drop saw its sales increase also for a month or two.

We'll see with time whether the PSP is now permanently selling more or if Sony merely managed to shift some of April and Junes sales to May.  I'm not including the GBA in this comparison even though it is a handheld and is still selling.  Since the DS and PSP launched the GBA has sold around 15 million units which is nothing to sneeze at and would drop the PSP's market share further. The only reason 20% of the market seems so much better today than in the past was that in the Game Gear's day 20% over 6 years was an unsupportable 10+ million units while if Sony manages 20% that's a profitable 30-40 million units.

Well I'll make my more on topic comments a seperate post.

I don't know if surge is the correct term here. Increase definitely, but is a 20% increase really a surge? The DS increased 16% and the Wii 73% from March to April. Perhaps it could be considered a surge but then the DS surged last April (not to mention February). In that case then just the last 3 months would show a 20% increase, even if a surge, is nothing spetacular.

I don't mean to sound critical, it is certainly good for the PSP and Sony. However, if Wii fanboys are supposedly premature in declaring a golden Wii-centric future after 7 months of historic sales then I think a moderate bump 3 years in is most definitely nothing to get excited about.

Sony have also spent a lot of money on a new marketing campaign... (US at least).

I still don't really understand all this. How many people on this forum would buy a PSP, then NOT buy games for it?

Is Sony making money off PSP hardware alone?

(recent figures have shown DS:PSP software sales to be around 6:1... where hardware is closer to 2.5:1?)

This would suggest that the other functions of the PSP are paying off and are selling points especially to non gamers.

My problem with this is that the UMD format is a complete flop. This isn't just anecdotal: I know with certainty that both Toys R Us and Best Buy have drastically cut down on the number of PSP movies being sold nation wide, and I can only presume it's because they didn't sell (they certainly don't at my store). Toys R Us now carries less than half the UMD movies they did 9 months ago (not just my store -- it's mandated company wide).

This means the MP3 player and photo album are the main selling points. I'm not saying that those can't play SOME role in people's decisions, but it seems unlikely that they're so important that the PSP would have half the attach rate of the DS. I'm not saying you're wrong, Ck; I'm just saying it still doesn't seem to add up in a way that makes sense to me.

I bought the PSP because it played MP3s, although I checked the game list first. I hadn't considered it before. I take it to work and play music on it a lot. Great machine. Video plays very nicely with my case, too.

Why didn't you get an ipod then?

I play games on it too, obviously. The only problem is the 4GB limit, but I just got a great deal on 9 512MB sticks for $12. That's going to be mainly for games, though, because now I can stream from my PS3 and PC (through the PS3 since it now streams from PC).

Ther are a lot of great PSP games, too. I'm still not finished with the great MGS: Portable Ops, and this year's games are the best yet.

Edit: It's also cheaper than a video ipod.  Also, I only bought the 512 sticks because it was a great deal.  I've had no problems storing a few hundred songs, some videos, and some games all at once.

Why are some people so surprised about the software sales. This list is from Gamespot and shows the releases in April and May. Please explain to me which of these games should be selling well, cause I don't see any big releases in there.

Your missing the point. The PSP software tie in for its ENTIRE LIFESPAN is horrible. It has not EVER been good, big releases or not, the system does NOT move software.

GTA:LCS and VCS didn't do well on the PSP then? Or MHP2 in Japan?

Ultimately, the tier ratios are lower than the DS, but they're still decent (around 4.0).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Wow 9 512MB for 12 bucks. That is great.

Ipod is not Ipod only for the mp3 player-since there are better mp3 players, it is also because you can get music online. You would have to rip your own mp3 to put it on a PSP.

I guess I just misread your post, I though you said you bought it as an MP3 player.
