Forums - Gaming - 4 Games We Want Hideo Kojima to Work on After Metal Gear Solid

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Kojima write the MGS scripts himself?  Shouldn't he atleast have some of the writers that work for the company help him?

I am not sure who writes it, but I am always told it is Kojima himself. I agree he should let others write his stories for him, and hire a really good editor to keep his terrible ideas in check. I don't know where you are going with this though.

I want him to work on any game that has a dedicated writer already on staff.

He is a brilliant game developer, and a horrible writer.

Just because MGS had lengthy cutscenes, that does not make him a bad writer.

Nope... all his bad writing makes him a bad writer.

Kojima can still write the stories.  He can also write the script but someone should atleast help him to make sure the writing is good.  Maybe some people would be able to tolerate the cutscenes better if he did.

Snatcher and Policenauts II.  The first two are amongst the greatest games ever made -- both written by Kojima one of the greatest writers of our time.  I would also like to see a special collection of the original Snatcher and Policenauts released in uncensored forms for the PS2.

I am really hoping for Snatcher II or Policenauts II either one a sequel to one two of the greatest games of all time and originally written by Hideo Kojima. I also want these new games to be written by Kojima as he is one of the greatest writers of our time certainly on a par with either Alan Moore or Frank Miller. I would also like to see uncensored, English versions of both Snatcher and Policenauts come to PS2 before the release of the sequels on PS3 so that American fans can experience what they've been missing.

Really, the only people complaining about Kojima's writing are 360 fans that take every opportunity that they can to make negative comments about anything on PS3. If you mention MGS 4 they say the writing is terrible when in reality Halo's story is totally lackluster and the level of good writing in Gears is almost totally non-existent.

The same people say things like there hasn't been a good FF game since 1995; however, the last three PS2 games all of have been given 9.5s by IGN and have higher Metacritic scores than any character-oriented / story-driven rpgs so far released on xbox consoles.

Finally, I hope we don't see Kojima's next major game coming to the Wii. I wouldn't mind to see Snatcher or Policenauts on the vrtual console (as long as they are uncensored and include all of the questionable to some elements from the Japanese versions); however, I really don't want to see his next major current gen game coming to Wii because that would be a step backwards instead of forwards from MGS 4.

I don't care about the length of the cutscenes. They could be longer if he likes. Just make sure the words coming out of the mouths of the characters doesn't sound like it was written by a 5th grader.

If the writing is as bad as you say it is, then I doubt it is Kojima's fault.  I think the English localization might have something to do with it since translating a Japanese script into English is by no means an easy task and very often, liberties have to be taken to successfully localize the game into a different language.

No, it's just that over the top George Lucas + Anime Nerd style writing.  It works when it's 30+ years old, but in modern games and movies it's just cheezy.

I love anime and nerdy stuff, but I never fool my self into think it's real.  Which is a problem, good writing for games and movies should make you think something that isn't real or possible is real.

Some examples of good sci-fi/fantasy/action scripts:

Blade Runner

Iron Man

Final Fantasy VI (for a game, I had to include one on the list)

Children of Men

I'm tired, you can add to this if you want to.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Final Fantasy XII

Mass Effect

Mass Effect was actually pretty cheesey IMO. In an adult Sci-Fi novel sort of way, but cheesey nonetheless. Anyone who's read Brin, Niven, Heinlein, Phillip K. Dick, et al is no stranger to this type of fiction, no pun intended.

If the mechanics and inventory system are improved in Mass Effect 2, I'll most likely pick it up near release, otherwise the story, while good, is not nearly good enough to keep me playing the series just to follow the entire trilogy.

In its defense, it is pretty much impossible to write a space opera that isn't cheesey in some way, shape or form.

The MG series essentially boiled down to character development for me although many of its sci-fi elements certainly have had a certain degree of prescience to them, which is always a hallmark of good sci-fi, particularly when it exists within a reality/universe not too far removed from our own.

I won't even go into the cartoonish elements of the series though; it is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Mass Effect had a superb script and was backed up by superb VA.  The game was still a big disappointment for me.  The combat was just horrible.

There are video games where the scripts aren't cheesy in anyway.

Not all video games are space operas. I'm far from being one of those literary elitists who bluntly state video games can't be well written even though I've read much of what is widely regarded as the best sci fi the genre has to offer.

I'd say that Mass Effect has high production movie level script writing, but I think most will agree that doesn't necessarily amount to much. I won't even put it into the context of Sci-Fi script writing for "these days" as though movie writing had some sort of magical period during which all true classics were created, which to many would be any time period but the present.

Even classics such as Blade Runner were not well received at all during its time and took at least a decade and a re-evaluation before it was given its due regard.
