Forums - General Discussion - The Internet is killing english !!!...Or maybe it's the americans

ab·bre·vi·a·tion

  1. The act or product of shortening.

spell·ing

  1. The forming of words with letters in an accepted order

From my experience the killing of the english language started with abbreviations such as "lol" and "lmao" but now we''ve advanced ( or degraded depending on how you look at it) into abbreviations for pretty much everything IMO (in my opinion) IMHO, POS (piece of shit) ROLF , pwned , FYI , etc etc etc

And on top of this there also seems to be a degrade in the spelling ability of the average user , i'm not talking about people who don't speak english as their first language and i'm not sure wether it's due to an influx of 9-12's gaining acess to the internet but it's a really troubling sign for the future.

I'm 17 , i'm not claiming to be some highly articulate , grammatical pro and i'm not saying everyone else should be either but I think it's agreed that the internet is pretty much killing our language.(or maybe the americans are lol)

It's coming to the point where dialogue on the internet wouldn't even be readable by some one born before 19XX , I mean i'm very guilty of it myself but still it's quite worrying.

Well you do have a point. It's getting pretty bad.

AND I WISH PEOPLE WOULD START UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "IT'S" AND "ITS"!

Seriously, I'm starting te believe hardly anyone on the internet knows how to use these correctly. Even on professional websites the mistakes are terrible. :p

i like to think otherwise. if im texting or typing on a forum like this, i dont care how i write it because i'm not trying to be professional or formal in any way. But when i have to write a paper for school, i try to be as grammatically correct as i possibly can, so i can get a good grade.

just like when i talk to my friends, i use slang but when i'm talking to an older person or someone i respect, i say stuff like "yes, sir...no,sir"

Generally, the only thing I make mistakes on in my writing are run-on sentences, the occasional spelling error (because I have huge fingertips), and repetition of commas. Besides that, it's pretty easy to avoid spelling and/or grammar mistakes.

The internet needs an age limit.

Most of the people who were born in the 19th century don't live anymore. There are hardly any alive people who are 110 years or older, so you don't have to worry about that.

Except that 19XX doesn't refer to the 19th Century Roland, it refers to the 20th

lol

Yes, it is difficult to translate.

Personally I send text messages in full English. Only if I have a lotto say and I want to keep it as 1 message will I shorten words, and I never replace words with numbers.
