Forums - Nintendo - What can Nintendo do to repeat the success of the Wii next generation?

Do you believe that Nintendo will just upgrade the graphics for the next Wii, or do something entirely different again? Sony and Microsoft's next consoles are almost certainly going to have motion control built in from the start after what happened this generation and they will definitely be catering more for the casual crowd, so what can Nintendo do to differentiate themselves?

I've tried to think of something new they could do like motion control, but I honestly can't - virtual reality was the only idea I had but it's still a long way off. I also though of games that involve touch sensitive peripherals but I'm not really sure how that could work. Any ideas?

Oh, and I don't want to hear "It's too early to be discussing this."

I think they will upgrade the graphics and the motion censers will be upgraded to be better than this generation. I think that Nintendo will be on top.

Virtual Reality.

If we knew... it wouldn't happen.

I mean... the Wii kicked ass, not because of the controllers primarly... but because of how unexpected it was and it's refocus on finding new gameplay like the PS1 did. Instead of just improving on what was already had.

They'll definitely be on par, graphically, even though that won't be the main attraction. People always seem to 'forget' that, of their consoles that had real competitors, before the Wii, two of the three were the strongest of their generations.

But I believe they'll have some sort of tracking mechanism that can be used in lieu of an actual controller. Possibly some type of projection that can 'beam' a hologram of a controller or in-game objects for you to interact with. PS3 is already seeing the beginnings of that first part, and I definitely think the second will be possible in 5 years' time, for a reasonable price.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I don't know what they'll do, but I do think they'll have a much more difficult time dominating the next gen than they did this one. All the casuals, seniors, etc... who bought the Wii are not the type for upgrading and staying on top of the lates releases.

edit: I'm not saying that only casuals and seniors buy the Wii so don't flame me, but it can't be denied that they are a significant portion of the userbase.

@Thekitchensink

Holographic interactivity at a reasonable price will not be possible in 5 years - more like 50.

@De85

I completely agree unless they do something drastically different again, as the Wii was from the generations before it.

It's hard to tell because when the big N took the gamble with the wii they had nothing to loose. Now that they're on top how much would they be willing to gamble with their winning formula?

I know you didn't want to hear this but: It's too early to tell.

@Shameless: I don't mean Star Trek style, just the projection of a 3D image. You've seen the Johnny Lee videos, right? The Wii can already do it, to some degree. If they were to optimize a system for that technology, combined with a Playstation Eye-like device that can sense your movement, I don't see how they couldn't do it.

I'm sure they're evaluating several control interfaces, it's possible they'll stay with motion controls though (with some sort of incremental update).

I won't pretend I know enough to predict what they'll do. There are so many possibilities...
