Forums - Gaming - Most recent gaming disappointment?

Kingdom Hearts 2. While I loved the first one and think the second game has its own merits the history was a disappointment. I appeal too much for the teenager audience and FF7 fanboys. The storytelling also feels a little "pseudo - intelectual". The game does not give you a clue what is going on always keeping the mysterious atmosphere. Suddenly they just explain everything and it feels pretty lame. I think that chain of memories gives more attention to the guys of Organization XIII than KH2. Some are killed right after you meet them. I missed some background story on those bad guys. Anyways it was a great game just not as good as the first one (I expected KH to suck it was quite a pleasant surprise).
My major all time disappointment was Chrono Cross. What a way to end the the saga of the best RPG in video game history.

Resistance vs. Gears is a toss-up for me. Gears loses miserably on story. I never got to play the multiplayer, so I will pass judgement on that. Single player was just plain fun though even if it was fairly short. Resistance isn't as revolutionary as Gears though. I would say it is a more "balanced" experience in all. The guns were pretty damn awesome, and I though multiplayer was very well-tuned.

Won't say anything about my hate for Resistance, but definately see where you're coming from about Gears.  I was pretty upset the first time through the game when it suddenly ended but I'm actually glad they kept it as short as they did.  I would have really like to know more about the locusts and what Fenix did, but that not knowing really adds to the game, like not how the zombies became zombies in a zombie movie.  If they would have tried to cram story into the game, I think it would have really distracted from what made the game fun.

Also, Gears is primarily a multiplayer game (though I like it for the single player).

Dude, Condemned was awesome. Such a visceral experience. I guess it just isn't for everyone. I love survival horrors I must admit, so I have somewhat of a predisposition. I played it on PC also, which might have changed things.

That's not the reason why the game failed for me, I loved Project Firestart for the c64 and replaying the game through emulation I understand why the game was so effective at the time, despite that the game lacks realistic graphics, 7.1 surround audio and what not. But the game's pretty limited environment is well designed and thought out pretty well, offering an atmospheric game setting, you wonder what happened at the space station and as investigate suddenly gory pictures are being thrown in your face, well placed sudden sounds used at the right time whenever something shocking happens or nervous music when running away from some weird space aliens, similar as done in good movies, etc. The surprise / shock factor is very important for this kind of game and non-ingame distractions should be as limited as possible (telling you can pick something up is such a distraction).

So Condemned failed on almost all accounts for me, all the time I was presented on screen buttons to press distracting me from the actual gameplay (I don't mind this in a God of War game, which isn't trying to give you a scare), no realistic physics like in other modern games whatsoever, swinging the axe at almost anything won't cause any realistic damage to the environment, etc.

The first crazed person coming out of the dark and swinging a pole at my face was effective, but after a few dozen times the effect completely wears off. It becomes repetitive, predictable and boring after a short while.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Rapala Fishing for the Wii was disappointing, but I wasn't expecting much. So the crown goes to ToeJam & Earl on the Wii Virtual Console.

I had heard so much enthusiasm for it from friends and online, I guess I was looking forward to a lot more. The game has a good sense of humor about it, and the music excels by 16-bit standards of funk, but there really isn't that much to do. Wander around the levels looking for spaceship parts, avoid the enemies, make use of the minimal powerups. My wife and I played two-player for a bit, which had its moments, but it didn't really grab me enough to actually try to finish the game.

(On the other hand, after putting off buying it for several weeks, VC Battle Lode Runner for the TG-16 has me seriously addicted for short stretches of time every now and then. So I will continue to purchase VC games and hope the hits continue to outnumber the misses!)

Final Fantasy VIII. Really would prefer not to go into why, other than to say that Final Fantasy was, up until that point, my favorite series of games.

The biggest dissapointment for me in awhile was probably killzone liberation for psp.

Bomberman DS. I wasnt expecting much from it, but I didnt even get that.

Zelda the Twilight Princess. The game its self was great, really great infact. The problem was the ending. After the awesome end boss and ending of Ocarina of time, Twilight Princess seemed a little tame compared.

Wow, you didnt like Bombermas DS!?  Did you play it with 7 other people and which one did you play?  We all had insane fun with that game and the fact you needed only one game for eight people made it even more awesome.

For me Motorstorm. Very great visuals and engaging gameplay but only 2 modes and limited tracks.
