I think they'd like to respond, but won't since they're already getting gimped by the dollar exchange and are trying to make some money.

Yeah man I was wondering the same thing. It's a pity no one bothered to reply to your post.

This news just in: With the 360 being smacked around the head with better sales of the Wii and PS3 (in spite a hefty price drop in Europe of the 360), fanboys focus all their efforts on the north American market where sales of their favorite consoles were an amazingly insignificant 10.000 units higher. Gazz, an all round gamer with pc and all consoles, except the 360 that failed on him twice reports....
All hope of fanboys is now focused on a short boost of sales when the 360 may or may not drop 50 dollars in price. A brilliant marketing plan, lets make the console that suffers from the image of being a cheap malfunctioning piece of hardware, and make that image even cheaper. Will Sony respond because they must get owned? No, because they did not in Europe and neither did Nintendo. The only thing the price drop did for the 360 in my area (I live in the Netherlands, Europe) is persuade people with little money to get the 360 and flash it to play backups.
Btw, great to see Starcraft trying to distort every discussion. I always figure he must be playing those marvelous games of his on his beloved 360, but with the amount of time he spends posting here and the 360 not having a browser we all know heś on his pc way more then on his 360. Logically of course since most 360 "exclusives" are on it, and it doesn't overheat as fast. Online is also free as it should be.

there was the kmart "add" showcasing a $300 360 but that might be a holiday sale and not a price drop.

Sorry to interupt here, but it is $50, reportedly only on the Pro version.
Maybe they shouldn't respond. The American economy is weak so I think a price-cut for any console would be slightly nullified as-well. They are making a slight bit of profit per console now and must slowly dig themselves out of this hole they have dug. If the X-box sells 80,000 a week which is my educated guess, then the PS3 is still selling 50,000. Just because the competition is doing better doesn't mean you are doing worse. Focus on your strategy and reduce the price when you can produce the machine and turn profit selling it at 300$.
They have a strong line-up this year so I'm happy and sales will go up to (I'm guessing) the 60,000 mark when the 80gb is in stock.

It would be quite difficult for Sony to cut PS3 hardware prices again, unless they want to keep losing money in their games division.
With the US$ dropping, revenue from US sales keeps falling relative to other sales - which is generally their biggest single market.
I doubt that European PS3 selling price is that much higher than the US$ selling price of the PS3 to distributors and retailers.
Generally, the higher prices for European goods is more of a reflection of the inefficiency of the distribution and retail channels, as well as red tape and taxes.
Just like here in Canada, where the currency is equal to the US but because of structural (the above) reasons, prices are generally 20% to 40% higher than in the US.
Also, if PS3s are sold at US$350 to USA retailers/distributors - then I doubt European retailers and distributors would accept buying it for the equivalent of US$450, even though the Euro is currently a much stronger currency.
