Forums - Sales - Effect of sub-Wii prices on Xbox360 sales?

I think a problem with it is that it's the arcade version. It's still too dumbed down a version that I don't think it's right to view the console's price as "less than wii." Until a 360 with full featues gets below the wii, I don't think there's any debate.

Shouldn't have any effect.

I'm in Europe, and I paid less for my 20 GB 360 than for my Wii (Amazon UK has had a promotion for months now). Even ignoring promotions, Wii's price is really close to the price of the 360 Premium in Europe, and the Wii still outsells it by far.

A lot of Americans seem to ignore this constantly.  The 20GB 360 Premium is cheaper than the Wii in Europe.

Officially, no. The official prices are 250 € for the Wii and 270 € for the 20 GB 360. However, it's not hard to find a bundle/promotion with which you'll get the Premium 360 for less than the Wii costs. Such good deals on the Wii are much more rare.

It may help 360 sales but not at the expense of the Wii - which is what you seem to be implying.

It's not about price for Wii vs 360 choice. Someone going in to get a Wii wants a Wii and they aren't even looking at 360 or PS3 no matter what price they are.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

The thing is that due to their similarities in hardware and the controllers, the typical consumer finds the PS3 more of a substitute to the 360 as the Wii. So, any gains from price jobs will be mostly at the PS3's expense. (And Nintendo will indirectly benefit from this "infighting")

I can't see the Australian price drop having that much of an impact on 360 world wide sales...

Ofcourse if Microsoft drop the price in the US i can see a temporary sales surge...

i wish ps3 was cheaper so it would sell better... imagine if the ps3 was $350 wow that would sell tones

Respect for compans: SONY > NINTENDO >>>>>>>>>> MICROSOFT

5 words.

Sub-Wii prices, sub-Wii Sales.

Longer answer:
If it suddenly dropped to 199 for the Premium than it might tie weekly. It's a good system with a great library.

Edit: 4 words. oops.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

MS has undercut the Wii in Australia by some $50 Australian. If they do the same thing (with the Arcade model, of course) in the US... how much of a danger will that pose to the Wii, since it will be displaced for the first time as the cheapest "next-gen" console, and by a console that has a pretty hefty library of titles, at this point?

I think we'll get to experience the effect of price-point on this generation's sales in a downright fantastic way, if this does indeed happen in the X360's largest market region (Americas). I wouldn't be surprised if the Arcade 360 started to eat up a LOT of the Wii's numbers, if this rumor is true -- I think low price is a pretty hefty factor for a console purchase.

Thoughts, opinions?

Good question, Mifely: your posts are direct and interestingly probing.

As others have noted, this has had no obvious impact in any other region of the world. Europe, Australia (Where the 360 is also cheaper now). Furthermore, we've seen large sales bumps for both the PS3 and 360 (Due to price cuts or big games or what have you), and these too have never shown any effects, even momentary ones, on the Wii's sales. And the Wii is actually in higher demand in the US than it is in those territories, so it seems unlikely it would be different here.

I personally agree with Pachter on this front: this has a much greater impact on the PS3 than it does the Wii. And again, the evidence is clear; if you pick through VGChartz' records, you'll see that it is very common for any spike in PS3 sales to accompany a drop in 360 sales, and vice versa. Which indicates that the PS3 and 360 can effect each other, but have little ability to affect the Wii.

It's possible this will have an affect, Mifley; I don't think your logic is crazy. I would say "unlikely," however.

Any price drop would affect the PS3 first, since they are after the same market. However, there's no way in hell this will slow down Wii sales in the least, lol. Even asking that question is uninformed. :P

It's the kind of question you ask, if you already know the answer too it, but you just want in reaffirmed by people you know don't wanna tell you the answer because it hurts. It's like a passive-agressive 360 flame, asking that question.

Can you see some guy like, "zomg price drop, Wii is doomed" and everybody nodding like, "omg, he's right! Darn you Microsoft!"

lol, it just doesn't happen and, for Nintendo at least, Microsoft's pricing is insignificant.

No one can really argue against that.

I will run counter to a lot of people here.

I think that the Xbox 360 could be seen as a substitute item if the Wii has a third straight holiday season with limited supplies. This would especially be true if the motion controller and avatar systems come out.

Clerk to potential customer who can't find a Wii:
"How about an Xbox 360? It's cheaper. It has motion. It has avatars -- they are like Miis." Customer -- "OK."

Of course, Nintendo knows this and will make sure it has sufficient supply -- because the only thing that can stop Nintendo at this point is Nintendo itself. And with short supply again it would do just that.

lol, so you're saying that if Nintendo sells plus or minus a million consoles this Xmas, pissed off consumers will spread word of mouth so fast, it will ruin the company, and Xbox will start outselling it?

No, people will just wait like they have been waiting the last two years. Smart people will buy early, like they have done for the last two years, and dumb, ignorant, or uninformed people will be waiting till March....like they have done for the last two years.

Despite what we hope human nature is, the longer we dangle something in front of their faces, the more they want it. Those dreams just compound.
