Forums - Sales - Effect of sub-Wii prices on Xbox360 sales?

MS has undercut the Wii in Australia by some $50 Australian.  If they do the same thing (with the Arcade model, of course) in the US...  how much of a danger will that pose to the Wii, since it will be displaced for the first time as the cheapest "next-gen" console, and by a console that has a pretty hefty library of titles, at this point?

I think we'll get to experience the effect of price-point on this generation's sales in a downright fantastic way, if this does indeed happen in the X360's largest market region (Americas).  I wouldn't be surprised if the Arcade 360 started to eat up a LOT of the Wii's numbers, if this rumor is true -- I think low price is a pretty hefty factor for a console purchase.

It had no effect in Europe, why would it be any different in the US where the Wii has even bigger demand?

Guh, this has been true for some time in Europe, it gave the 360 a moderate sized boost, but nothing too drastic

The "more expensive" PS3 also outsells the X360 in Europe. I would venture to say that the typical European console consumer has a different idea of whats worthwhile in a console purchase than the typical American console consumer.

I think price point is more important in the Americas, especially during rough economic times, but... you both have a valid point -- a different market has shown no real impact.

Hell naw.... The Wii's demand in the states DESTROYS its demand in Others.

The price cut will have a positive effect on 360 sales, a somewhat, teeny, negative sales on Ps3, 0 effect on the Wii's sales.

There are lots of people who are only interested in the Wii because it is designed in a way that makes gaming accessable to them, for these people the XBox 360 could be half the price of the Wii and it wouldn't matter; there are people who are interested in the Wii along with other systems, and a lower priced XBox 360 increases the likelyhood of them buying a Wii and an XBox 360; and there are people who favour other systems over the Wii and will probably not be impacted by a lower priced XBox 360.

The XBox 360 would see some gains in their weekly sales, but it would not impact the sales of the Wii.

And Australia is kind of half way between Europe and America in terms of console choice. So I doubt it'll make too much difference down under.

You may have a point about America. I'm Waiting for E3

The only factor affecting Wii sales in the US is the number of Wiis available for sale. The 360 price drop will not affect US Wii sales at all.

I think it will have little to no effect on the Wii... They aren't really seen as competitors in the eyes of consumers...

The PS3 that might be another story... But, only time will tell...

Won't affect the wii. Majority of the people buying the wii are buying it because thats the console they want and it just happens to be affordable so they don't have to wait for price cuts. Thus, the 360 could cost $100 and most will still buy the wii but some would buy both.
