And the starting price of ther product to be available to the mass market. they did sale 3.5 mill on one game, they werent that far of LOL

I didn't want to get sucked into this conversation, but here we go. Asking someone to pay $600 dollars for what is essentially a toy is nowhere near in touch with reality. I know when you get your money from your parent $600 doesn't sound like much at all, but that's a huge investment.
And they didn't sell 3.5 million with one game, there were several, many were bought hoping to make a profit, a fair number (not majority more than likely) were bought as a Blue-Ray player, and a lot were bought based on name alone.

just saying, they are selling something thats at the level of the old gen at double its price. hows that for treating the customers great ? |
Nintendo still has to recoup the cost of R&D for the Wiimotes. They didn't hire monkeys to develop those things....they were busy making the SIXAXIS.

For people who can honestly say that $600 is a fair price for a to, yes, I'm going to assume that they don't make their own money. $600 or more is fine to pay for something, say, like a TV, furniture (double that even), an actual computer, but $600 is a lot of money and it's hard to reason paying $600 for a console. Even with my games must equal the price of the console theory I'm still likely never to pay for a $600 console. About the only way I can see myself paying $600 for a console is perhaps they completely remade FFVI and even that would be pushing it. This isn't a fanboy statement here or some Sony hate, it's just simply that $600 is a lot of money.
As for can I afford something that is $600? I could if I felt like saving a short while, but that something better be worth $600. The PS3, or any console, is not worth $600.

Ah. Haha Vitual Boy. Man I would love to see some stuff Nintendo has said back then! Yeah, I agree every company says stupid arrogant crap sometimes. Honestly I think Sony has gotten MUCH better with their recent press releases. I haven't heard an insult from them in a long time. |
Here we go, this is one of the original virtual boy commercials, LOL.... I had forgotten all about this:

As for arrogance, I'm sorry I've never really paid attention to any companies claims, they're all arrogant, in every field of business.

Sorry, but these aren't toys, at least in the same essence that they are associated with children, anymore(which may in fact be the problem), other than in the sense "boys and their toys" electronics/cars/guns/whatever sayings. As for mommy and daddy paying for it, NO that would be a Wii(this is NOT an insult, parents do buy these for themselves and their kids). Mommy and Daddy would never(ok well maybe daddy might) spend $600 on junior's games. The main demographic of PS3/360 owners are probably 25+ males with good jobs. A PS3 and a 360 are serious electronics, high definition, networking capabilities, wifi, bluetooth, blu-ray, d/lable music/movies, etc. They are in as much toys as is your TV, computer, PDA, home theater system, car audio system, cellphone, etc is. Granted this may not be what some people want and it's true that Sony neglected a part of it's market share FOR NOW, but it will get cheaper, probably quick, and then again will be more mainstream.
You can go on to say that that's not what it is supposed to be, well for me it happens to be frigging awesome that it is all those things, though in all honesty if I still had a crap job and little disposable income then I would be VERY pissed about the price too, cause then I'd be the one waiting till 2009 to get one.
BTW, Some people spend exponentially more on their habit of choice, whether it's golf, hunting, skiing....

Sony pretty much gets flak for two reasons:
1) They were on top last-gen, everyone likes taking shots at the top dog.
2) They're doing these things now, the examples you gave were pretty much all a long time ago.
People have been slamming the 360 Elite and related statements as well.

When parents buy their kids a console (which is in the context I was talking about), the parents are buying their kids a toy. We may see it as something else, but that's all it is.
Though, really, a console is a toy. Even with things like Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree, you don't get any use out of it other than fun. This isn't meant as any kind of an insult to any console, it just is what it is. True, people have other expensive hobbies like skiing or golfing or whatever, but those are sports and they are different. I know there are people that think of gaming as a sport, but it isn't (and don't even try to argue this because I'm really not going to bother beyond that statement because it is simply an opinion and none of us are right).

I second that - consoles are toys. Hell, I even consider my gaming PC as a toy, since I only use it for gaming (and browsing, but mainly to find the next game I want to download or to look for walkthroughs).
