I know when you get your money from your parent $600 doesn't sound like much at all, but that's a huge investment. And they didn't sell 3.5 million with one game, there were several, many were bought hoping to make a profit, a fair number (not majority more than likely) were bought as a Blue-Ray player, and a lot were bought based on name alone. |
Sorry, but these aren't toys, at least in the same essence that they are associated with children, anymore(which may in fact be the problem), other than in the sense "boys and their toys" electronics/cars/guns/whatever sayings. As for mommy and daddy paying for it, NO that would be a Wii(this is NOT an insult, parents do buy these for themselves and their kids). Mommy and Daddy would never(ok well maybe daddy might) spend $600 on junior's games. The main demographic of PS3/360 owners are probably 25+ males with good jobs. A PS3 and a 360 are serious electronics, high definition, networking capabilities, wifi, bluetooth, blu-ray, d/lable music/movies, etc. They are in as much toys as is your TV, computer, PDA, home theater system, car audio system, cellphone, etc is. Granted this may not be what some people want and it's true that Sony neglected a part of it's market share FOR NOW, but it will get cheaper, probably quick, and then again will be more mainstream.
You can go on to say that that's not what it is supposed to be, well for me it happens to be frigging awesome that it is all those things, though in all honesty if I still had a crap job and little disposable income then I would be VERY pissed about the price too, cause then I'd be the one waiting till 2009 to get one.
BTW, Some people spend exponentially more on their habit of choice, whether it's golf, hunting, skiing....
