Forums - Sales - Lets discuss Square - Enix losses

So does anyone want to actually LOOK at the SquareEnix financials?

They made around 100m US last year - down a little on the previous year. Their revenue was around $1.5bn US (approx).

I think they are doing fine - if anything, its the "mobile" (phone) segment that has let them done - the DS is the main cash contributor at the moment.

Over last year (sales):
- offline games, down 20%
- online games, down 11%
- phone games, down 15%
- publications, level
- others (cards, etc), up 120%

Sales:
- Japan, down 3%
- US, down 45% (!)
- Europe, down 35%
- Asia, down 41%

Forecast for this financial year is about $120m profit, up around 20%.

I seen many people say Japan market is going down, his statements aren't 100% false.

I think they do have to make FFXIII an epic game but also if they are going to do side projects such as those two FF7 games, they need to make them better.

They both merged for a reason- they were in financial troubles, beside their main franchises, they really do need to make better quality games to sustain their main ones.

Oh and the two biggest Jrpgs are Pokemon and Final Fantasy

Not in Japan. The DQ series is insanely popular in Japan, significantly above FF. DQ VIII sold almost as many copies as FF XII worldwide, despite selling basically nothing outside of Japan. 2.25M copies in one week for DQ VIII in Japan is ridiculous, and I can't even imagine how many copies the next one will sell on the DS. 5 million first week in Japan? I honestly wouldn't rule it out.

The dedication you show to any particular console or company is inversely proportional to the number of times you have gotten laid. If you get laid enough, even if you prefer a certain brand, you just don't give enough of a shit to argue about it on the internet.

Agreed, but I think he meant WW. Anyway I think square enix is going to try to make DQ more popular in the U.S, and Others with the remakes, and IX.

When I saw this thread title, I was scratching my head, because I thought Square was still in the black (despite coasting on brand since the PS2 came out, but that's just my opinion).

Thanks for shining the cold light of truth on this thread.

Well, one reason SE are taking longer to makes games is because they are also trying to make a great engine from the ground up that works on wii, 360, and ps3. Epic's unreal engine has been around for a decade and they have been able to build up it, Japanese developers used to be able to just create a game from the ground up and make money, that isn't feasible any more. They need the middle ware to speed up the development process and make it cheaper, since they didn't start a long time ago like in the west they are having to play catch up now. Once they catch up, things will be fine.

and jenny, to make the best game possible, it needs to be exclusive. Not to say good games can't be made multiplatform, but doing that won't take advantage of the strength of a system, they would need to find a middle ground and that just compromises a game.

btw, add me to the list of skeptics about all the Japanese companies losing money, they sell plenty of software, most more than enough to cover development costs.

Cod IV, GTAIV, Rock Band, Guitar hero II say hi. All above 90%.

I said right after that good games can be multiplatform, but to get the best out of the hardware you need to be exclusive so that you can take advantage of their strengths.

There's no Square Enix losses so I don't really see how we can discuss them :p

Shams : don't forget that the reason their US revenue was down so much was partially due to change. the dollar went down the toilet that year compared to the yen...

Other reason is that their previous fiscal year included the release of FF XII in Others and US ( it did release in 2006 if I remember well, a few months before the PS3 was released).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
