Forums - Nintendo - Wii sales are not driven by games

People seem to be misunderstanding the OP. I think his point is that hardcore nintendo fans would have bought the wii for the marios, zeldas and super smash bros but the reason the wii has done better than is predecessors is that the "non-gamers" bought it for the peripherals and were then advised to buy certain nintendo first party titles when wondering what to buy. Hence, those series will sell even more on wii.

The reason there are sales boosts when certain series are released is because some fans wait for their favorite series to release before taking the plunge while the "non-gamers" keep the wii afloat for the rest of the year.

At the very least his OP seems to be a marginalization of Wii SW. Nobody is buying a Wii to hold a wiimote or stand on a balance board. They're buying it to play games. SW and HW is a packaged deal.

I think it's pretty easy to see what his ORIGINAL implications were.

I said ROFFLE at this thread!

This.

It's ridiculous how defensive some of you guys get when I'm not trying to troll the console at all. If you don't want to contribute, don't bother posting.

You shouldn't be talking.  Maybe try responding to the posts that actually rebutt your argument (while kicking its' ass)?  Everyone has already said my arguments at length, so I'm not saying anything more since you won't respond.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Nobody has 'kicked my arguments ass' because they are not actually reading what I've wrote. This thread isn't about Nintendo fans: they would have bought the console no matter what.

Another stupid thread about Wii's Doom.

How many of these do we really need? It's obvious that games sell on the Wii because of the new peripherals, as these games are designed to work with it.

Who the hell buys a console to collect the peripherals? What a dumb thread.

And then a lot of Wii haters join in to say: "Wii has no games, no 3rd party support, all games suck except for SSBB and SMG."

Wii has a lot of games already that are worth playing, Wii's 3rd party support is getting bigger as time passes by.

This is a sad last attempt to downplay the Wii hoping it will reverse the console race. No sorry, it's already over. What we will be seeing on the Wii from now on are even greater games.

You seem to have shifted the topic's purpose by quite alot from what it was supposed to be, or atleast "appear."

@ Topic
It is driven by the combonition of the Wii Remote and Wii Sports, as Sports seems to still be the most successful implementation of what the Wii Remote's potential is. That's why it is the game the people most play.

There were plenty of replies which didn't involve Nintendo fans at all... First of all, you could start by explaining which peripherals in particular influenced sales a lot.

Wii Fit came out much after launch. The Wiimote isn't really a peripheral. What peripherals are you talking about then?

Ok, let's take you, for example. What made you decide to buy the Wii as your first console? I imagine because it was the first console to offer something truly different from PC gaming, or maybe because you wanted your family to play with you. So, why did you buy the Wii? If it was because of the games then why didn't you buy a Gamecube or an N64? Because of the controller. How many more of these do I have to do?

Take away the entire Wii games libary and then see how well it performs , chuck 20 new peripherals in there to proove my point.

Actually, no. The Wii's sales pattern has, except as a matter of scale, been the norm throughout the industry for every generation before this one. When system-seller games are released, there's a major spike in sales for a few weeks which dies back, but sales never quite go back to the levels they were at before the game is released. System-seller games gave a permanent uptick to system sales until the consoles went into decline.

Only in this gen, and then only with the HD consoles, are we seeing this pattern fail to manifest: even the most hyped "system seller" games fail to have any lasting effect. Why? My theory on this is that HD console gamers are treating their consoles as investments: they buy the consoles early on in the hope of good games coming out later. I don't claim to understand why they do this, but it's a matter of public record that GTA4, MGS4, and Halo 3 were touted as the main reasons to buy their consoles long before the games themselves were released, and FFXIII is still treated this way. As a result, these games have already sold most of the consoles they're going to sell before the games themselves come out, and so sales crash back to "normal" relatively quickly. But the Wii hasn't seen this behavior: people still tend to wait for big-name games before buying, but when they do the sales don't go back down.

But what I don't understand is why HD gamers are treating their consoles as though they were stocks and bonds. They're game consoles, people. Get them when they have what you want.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

You've missed the point entirely. I am trying to say that the peripherals are more important to Wii's sales than games, just as software was more important than peripherals to PSone's sales. Of course they are both factors.
