Forums - Nintendo - Why the Wii will be getting Japanese exclusives, but not Western (GAF post)

There's is a high chance for a new IP to make DQ of FF a run for their money.

Last generation, the RPG battleground was the PS2. During this period there were RPGs that were as good and even better then FFs or DQs in substance, but is very hard to compete against franchise with a successful past that build up hype. It's what the fans expect. That's why new IPs had little chances.

On the other hand, since N64, Nintendo's consoles housed very few RPG's. On gamecube, ToS, SoA and BK were on their own very successful.  ToS has sold the most units than any other Tales game in America, and there are even gamers that think of it as the best RPG ever made. Namco's biggest mistake was to not push the franchise on the GC even more and went back to PS2 where it was "safer ground". they had all the chances and even more when Square relased Christal Chronicles and gave them the opportunity on a PLATINUM plate.

On Wii, there is an opportunity as golden as El Dorado. The mayority of Wii owners don't care if a game is a Final Fantasy or not, they aren't RPG fans and hype is almost null.... If a company can successfully make and market a Role Playing game fornthe platform, it's going to be really successful, given the wider installed base

Interesting thought. I cannot see how any oldschool Japanese Role Playing Game or Western Role Playing Game could ever achive that kind of success on the Wii though, and my conclusion therefore is that you would probably be very dissapointed in such a game. The new Role Playing Games must incorporate all the values that the Wii stand for to be that successful, and god knows how a game like that would look. Simply put, we need a 'Wii RPG'.

By the way, I have decided to try to stop using all sorts of abbrevations. This comes as a reaction to the quoted post where previously unmentioned games are presented with abbrevations that I simply cannot understand. But I'm sure that Soldiers of America and Bowling King are great games ;)

Nice graphs, but they are using NPD numbers which I don't trust because they are a for-profit company; who knows where there allegiances lie? (Just kidding btw)

You can't really argue with the post though, except over one piece of logic...

The poster assumes that PS3 + 360 sales are more important to decision making than Wii versus each one individually.

I might actually guess that PC + 360 is more important for western developers because of easier porting. And PS3 is more of an oddity with it's own market, kinda like Xbox was last generation.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

well wii will get the big japanese exclusives, and some western exclusives made by smaller companies

SquareEnix knows this better. They can't just put Final Fantasy on the Wii for it will not sell as well as on PS3 because of the fanbase. Is a lot easier to hype PS3 owners than the majority of Wii gamers that maybe don't even know what Final Fantasy is. That's why they must take their time (and actually develop a great game) in order to attract the Wii owners.

Wii has become an "equal ground" for RPG developers to battle in order to deliver a true experience. Hype from the past is almost non-existent so any company can make a huge seller.

I hope this comes true. Id love to see Eternal Sonata or maybe a sequel for it on the Wii.

- PSP: 59,351 5,324 (8.23%)
- Wii: 41,037 4,527 (9.94%)
- DS Lite: 36,599 2,602 (6.64%)
- PS3: 20,336 54,975 (73.00%)
- PS2: 6,346 951 (13.03%)
- Xbox 360: 2,555 392 (18.12%)

 Woah, woah woah...

I take back everything I said.  All the consoles were down in JPN this week except 360 which was up 18.12% (that's almost 18.5, which could get rouned up to 19)... MS Domination of Japan began 6/22/08
