Forums - Gaming - Price not GTA IV to blame for slow PS3, 360 sales, says analyst

@NJ5: Thanks, i thought i didn't need to point out the obvious, but on a second thought, it's good you mentioned it.

@reask: There's few flaws in your thinking i noticed:
Every console has its exclusives, meaning they will not be available for other consoles owners. I do agree that Wiis library is lacking racing sims and shooters (atleast in comparision) and the only titles (that i know are coming) in specific genres are Wii Motorsports (from which we haven't heard anything in a long time), CoD5 and Conduit. Sure there are some games already, but nothing really as high profile as PS360 has. And another thing, the previous in mind is, that, aside the two genres mentioned, Wii is propably getting the best SW support and this is playing the game for Wii. From my experience, there isn't a lot of people who would play games in only one or two genres, people like to pick variety of games.
And my other thing is, that when PS3 has big library and cheap price, the competition propably has bigger library (i don't bet my money for 360 in this one) and cheaper price. So nothing has really changed.

If you were only meaning Pachters mindset, then i apologize and target this at Pachter.

Oh, and we should also keep in mind that exclusives tend to be main reason to get specific console (although, history shows that having last gens biggest franchises as next gen exclusives doesn't weigh a shit in winning next gen), and this is where PS3 has been the biggest loser.

No it was just my opinion. As I said earlier in the post there is A wii in my household but I never play it there is no games on it I want to play at present.

I do agree with you that people dont just like racing sims and shooters but they do like the realism aspect of those games.

As I said if more third party developers come on board these type of games will help the wii broaden its appeal even more.

After all there is no reason they cannot be done for the wii they have been done already with cod3 and the moh series.

I beg to differ on your 360 analysis maybe it,s because I own one but I really think ms are in A completely different position this time around.

after all they are in second place 2 and a half years into the consoles life span.

Price is definitely a factor in why PS3 is doing so poorly (relatively speaking) as can be seen from how much sales increased last year after the price drop. However. that is Sony's error of judgement in adding tons of features, trying to make a living room computer and a trojan horse in the high def disc format war and thinking everyone that bought a PS2 would buy the PS3 irrespective of price.

However, to say Wii is only selling because of the price is bordering on retarded for a number of reasons. e.g. ebay has shown many people are willing to pay much higher prices for Wii, Wii has not even gotten to what is considered the sweet spot price for consoles and Gamecube was much much cheaper than Wii and still didn't sell very well.

The Gamecube didn't do very well because third party support was lacking compared to the PS2 which had a ton of it.

Price isn't the only factor. I don't want either, because they do NOTHING to advance gaming. I can play GTA3 on either of the last gen iterations, and they're just the same as 4, if not more fun and less repetetive.

HD isn't a selling point.

Analyst Michael Pachter reckons 90% of last gen sales happened at the 199$ price.

Seems like it will be 2010 before we see mass penetration of ps3 or 360.

You can check it out here.

I really feel this is almost some kind of myth. The biggest reason why almost all sales happen after dropping to $199 and below is because PS2 hasn't been above $199 for long so it has been selling below that pricepoint for like 80-90% of its lifetime. Sony produced around 18M units of PS2s the year before the price cut, the 2 years following the price cut they produced 22.5M and 20M units. Although it is in increase, it really isn't the huge difference and it is hardly a reason for any "wait until console X drops to $200" remarks.

God Michael is still talking? I thought he said he would stop or something, maybe that was a joke, posted by someone. Seriously I think anyone can do Pachter's job. Just watch:
Final Fantasy 13 will sell 1 million units in Japan in the first month
Nintendo's next franchise will be announced at E3
Microsoft will announce that they are all about hardcore gamers and ten minutes later they will announce Scene it 2.

@reask: Actually my analysis (if you were meaning the library part) is because of Japan. Despite every other japanese dev and publisher saying that they plan to target west with their games, they still seem pick 360 over PS3 only if M$ pays them. So, i think it depends on the PS3 japanese support and 360 ports, whether 360 or PS3 will have better library in the future.

@Acevil: LMAO.
