If you picked 12 Leo-j, the symbol you should be looking at is number 9.
12 - (1+2) = 9.

If you're getting the wrong symbol, then you suck at math. It's really simple.
Divisible by 9 is the key.
Oh, I finally get it!
Your number will always be divisible by 9, and whatever numbers are divisible by 9 on the chart are fitted with a different symbol each time.

Basic trick. It is always a multiple of 9.
It starts with the basic two digit number that ends in 0. It always ends up as a multiple of 9. That is because it is the Distributive Property of Multiplication. 9*n= 10n-n.
That is the same exact thing they're using here. If you're number doesn't end in 0, they make you subtract the number.
