Basic trick. It is always a multiple of 9.
It starts with the basic two digit number that ends in 0. It always ends up as a multiple of 9. That is because it is the Distributive Property of Multiplication. 9*n= 10n-n.
That is the same exact thing they're using here. If you're number doesn't end in 0, they make you subtract the number.
