So all it took was blu ray to win and subsequently make PS3 the cheapest bluray player, MGS4 and GT5p to be released, PSN to start catching up and bundles in EU like the GTA4 bundle and GT5p bundle just to get a gain of 1million?

Hmm, so at this rate if the 360 never picks up any slack in the rate of sales its at now, the PS3 will catch up by 1st quarter 2010. ;)

Your even understating it,  The 360 RROD, no built in wireless, expensive proprietary hard drives, no web browser, noblu-ray, fewer 08 big exclusives....  and like you said,

the PS3 still only cought up by ~ 1 million.

^what's the hurry? it's still more expensive and selling better.

Considering that PS is much more popular in Europe and Japan, the 360 still did well in 2008. Of course, MS MUST do something to avoid sliding further in WW sales, and to regain the definite position in America. There's more and more people walking in shop to purchase PS3 software and accessories.

isnt that the truth. A few family members are waiting for the PS3 to become cheaper. me cuz has opted for a v360 in the mean time though, this is bad for sony because mabe alot of people have done this two, and some of these people may end up likeing the 360 so much that they dont want a ps3

The true cost to own for each console..

For the X360, even at $299. Assume on average one would own it for 6 years. The Xbox Live subscription would cost you $300. That puts the total cost to $599+.

For PS3, it's either $399 or $499.

And you actually get more from the PS3 for less the cost in a long term investment.
best BD player on the market, bigger HD, etc..
