I don't think anyone ever bought Windows just to play Solitaire or Minesweeper, or at least normal people.

Wii Sports OTOH was the best selling game in Japan in 2007 and it was not bundled at all.

OTOH?

Hes only got one (hand), thats why the Wii is such a big thing for him. .

My main point: Why count bundles at all when they aren't sold? They don't produce any revenue, they introduce fuzzyness to the numbers, and their main purpose is added value - akin to a price cut.

They do add value in revenue simply by being the bundle. Tons and tons of people bought their NES, Gameboy or Wi solely for Super Mario Bros, Tetris or Wii Sports. The bundle is important. Sure, the game would have not sold as much if it wasnt bundled, but thats why you see reference to both "best selling game" and "best selling non-bundled game."

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

Because if Wii Sports wasn't counted, some other game would be purchased in its place. It's kind of hard to use a Wii without any software. Although I suppose it's possible through VC and WiiWare, but that is highly unlikely.

Really, if you don't want to count it, it isn't that hard to ignore it.

Would it have even been purchased in the first place? Even if its got a 50% attach rate in the wild, then realistically its overtracked by 13million compared to what people would have purchased had the game not been free. Im using Japan where it isn't bundled as a guide for how much it would sell without being bundled. There wouldn't be a 100% conversion rate had it not been bundled either for the purchase of an alternate game instead as it was given away free.

Theres also the problem that if Wii Sports and Wii Play are just considered bundled then its unfair on the Wii because in Japan - Wii Sports isn't bundled so it under represents their total sales and its also unfair because its much more difficult to extricite the bundled numbers out of the Xbox360 and PS3 numbers.

Tease.

There is no right answer. I don't know what you're expecting. There are pluses and minuses for counting it or not counting it.

Which is why bundled games have to be included, yes. How do you differentiate between bundled and non-bundled Motorstorm or Marvel Ultimate Alliance sales? You can't. So all game sales count.

Wii Sports is free and doesn't produce revenue? Then why have Wiis been cheaper in territories without the Wii Sports bundle ever since launch?

Somebody get some dead horse pics in here, pronto.

Except for the fact that it also skews results. To remove skews and to not remove skews. :/ Especially considering third party success/attach rate comes up so often for the Wii.

If bundles aren't counted, then the Wii is a much better seller of third parties but the attach rate goes down.

Tease.

If we did not count bundles PS3 would not have any million sellers :P

Then, why don´t we track the game "snake" for old Nokia cellphones as well or Pinball for Windows? Honestly, these are small free games that were part of the OS and that the consumers don´t even know they are part of it.

Lol, Solitare/Minesweeper, that would be about 1 billion sold worldwide, I dunno I think Grand Theft Auto VI might have a chance to beat it.

You can't help but root for the underdog, GO PS3!

End of 08' Sales

Wii:                      39.56

Xbox 360:           24.75

Playstation 3:     20.58

Halo 3, GTA4, Marvel Ultimate Aliance, Motorstorm, MGS4, Viva Pinata, R:FoM, GT5:P, and Forza 2 off the top of my head would have to be thrown out as well. The data is far more complete and accurate with the bundles including. I don't even want to imagine how to deal with the complicated issue of the specials that bundle a game of your choosing with the system.
